Interfacial properties of fast chemical reactions occurring in demixed ternary mixtures

Joe Hajjar et al.

Summary: A new theoretical framework for studying the interfacial properties of reactive liquid mixtures has been introduced. The framework is based on kinetic rate equations using activities instead of concentrations and the incompressible density gradient theory. The method allows for the investigation of chemical reactions in both the bulk phases and the interface between them. The study showed that the chemical reaction reaches equilibria first in the bulk phases and then in the interface, contrary to the classical two-film theory used in chemical engineering for mass transport calculations.

Dynamic modelling of the interfacial concentration profiles of fast chemical reactions in reactive liquid-liquid systems

Summary: A theoretical framework is applied to study the interfacial properties of reactive liquid-liquid systems using specific model examples. The framework considers kinetic rate equations based on activities and the incompressible density gradient theory. The impact of thermodynamic and kinetic parameters on the dynamics of chemical reactions in the liquid bulk phases and interfaces is investigated. The predictions and calculations are compared to a standard model example, and the expected reactive and phase behavior is observed when varying the parameters.

Summary: Interfacial properties, such as interfacial mass transfer, play a crucial role in the design and optimization of industrial separation processes. This study investigates the interfacial behavior of two quaternary systems and the relationship between interfacial enrichment and mass transfer. By combining the Concentration Gradient Theory (CGT) with the Koningsveld-Kleintjens (KK) model, the interfacial tension and interfacial concentration profiles are calculated. The results show that interfacial mass transfer in quaternary systems can be accurately modeled by adjusting a single additional binary mobility coefficient, and indicate a potential link between interfacial enrichment and interfacial mass transfer.

Summary: This study examines mass transfer in reactive liquid-liquid systems using the dynamic concentration gradient theory. The model combines the concentration gradient theory with a reaction kinetics model and was validated by experiments.
