Enzymatic fish protein hydrolysates in finfish aquaculture: a review

Muhammad A. B. Siddik et al.

Summary: In intensive farming systems, incorporating health-promoting compounds like proteins, hydrolysates, and bioactive peptides into fish feed is crucial for enhancing defense mechanisms, growth, and immune functions of fish. Fish processing waste can be converted into valuable products such as fish protein hydrolysate (FPH), which is rich in nutrients and antioxidants, improving fish growth, immune response, and disease resistance. The production of targeted FPH with superior functionalities has high demand in aquafeed supplements, showing potential for sustainable aquaculture development.

Potassium diformate in the diet of sterlet sturgeon (Acipenser ruthenus): Zootechnical performance, humoral and skin mucosal immune responses, growth-related gene expression and intestine morphology

Mansore Kakavand et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the dietary effect of potassium diformate (KDF) on growth performance, body composition, immune responses, gene expression, and intestine histomorphology in sterlet sturgeon. The results showed that the inclusion of KDF in the diet can improve growth performance, immune function, and intestinal morphology in sterlet sturgeon, with the most significant effects observed at KDF levels of 6 and 9 g kg(-1).

A g-Type Lysozyme from Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Shrimp Kills Selectively Gram-Negative Bacteria

Jing-Chang Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, a g-type lysozyme (LysG1) was identified and characterized from shrimp inhabiting a deep-sea hydrothermal vent. The recombinant LysG1 exhibited selective bactericidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria by binding to bacterial cell wall components and inducing cell lysis. Mutation analysis revealed the importance of specific protein helixes in the bacterial binding and killing activities of LysG1. These findings provide insights into the activity and mechanism of g-type lysozyme in crustacean and deep-sea organisms.

Intestinal Cetobacterium and acetate modify glucose homeostasis via parasympathetic activation in zebrafish

Anran Wang et al.

Summary: Fish have limited capability to utilize carbohydrates compared to mammals. In this study, zebrafish fed with omnivorous and herbivorous diets showed better glucose homeostasis due to enrichment of the commensal bacterium Cetobacterium somerae, which produces acetate. Dietary supplementation of acetate promotes glucose utilization in zebrafish, and the beneficial effect of acetate and C. somerae on glucose homeostasis is mediated through parasympathetic activation. These findings suggest potential strategies for improving fish carbohydrate utilization.
