Depression mechanisms of sodium humate and 3-mercaptopropionic acid on pyrite in fine coal flotation

Chengyong Wang et al.

Summary: Pyrite in coal causes serious environmental pollution in the utilization of coal. Flotation is an appropriate method to remove pyrite present in fine coal, and sodium humate (HA-Na) and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) can be used as depressants for pyrite removal. Molecular dynamics simulation investigates the depression mechanisms of HA-Na and 3-MPA. Results show that HA-Na has a better effect on reducing sulfur content in flotation cleaned coal, while 3-MPA has a stronger selectivity in removing pyrite.

The inhibiting effect of sulfuric acid pretreatment in the flotation of new low-TiO2 ilmenite: Surface property and adsorption mechanism

Qingyou Meng et al.

Summary: In the industrial flotation separation process, the floatability of new low-TiO2 ilmenite is higher than that of common ilmenite, resulting in a decrease in the TiO2 grade of the final concentrate. It has been found that sulfuric acid pretreatment can improve the floatability of common ilmenite. However, this study discovered that sulfuric acid pretreatment decreases the floatability of new low-TiO2 ilmenite. The changes in NaOL adsorption and surface hydrophobicity of low-TiO2 ilmenite after acid surface pretreatment were responsible for the reduction in its flotation recovery.

Molecular characteristics of the mixed cationic/anionic collector interface probed by sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations

Guangli Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular structure and orientation of mixed dodecylamine hydrochloride (DDA) and sodium oleate (NaOL) collectors and water molecules at the air/water interface. Surface pressure measurements, sum frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were conducted to characterize the interface. The results show that individual NaOL and DDA collectors exhibit good ordering at the interface, while mixed collector systems may have gauche defects. Increasing the molar ratio of NaOL to DDA enhances the ordering of interfacial water molecules. The study provides insight into the flotation phenomena and molecular characteristics of collectors, contributing to the improvement of froth flotation technology.

Investigation of the effect of phosphoric acid as an acidic medium in flotation separation of dolomite from magnesite

Lev O. Filippov et al.

Summary: Flotation separation of carbonate minerals is challenging due to their similar surface properties. This study explored the flotation of dolomite and magnesite under acidic to neutral pH conditions using oleate as collector and hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid as pH regulator. It was found that the recovery of dolomite was unaffected by pH, whereas the recovery of magnesite decreased with acid addition, particularly when phosphoric acid was used. The results indicated that dolomite had a higher dissolution rate than magnesite at acidic pH, providing more calcium ions for interaction with the oleate collector. The findings were supported by infrared spectroscopic analysis, which showed a greater amount of oleate adsorption/precipitation on dolomite compared to magnesite. Furthermore, the presence of new PO4 species in the Raman and infrared spectra of these minerals at acidic pH suggested a potential surface passivation of magnesite, explaining the decrease in magnesite flotation when phosphoric acid was used as pH control.

Effect of the adding order of sulfuric acid on the flotation behaviors of ilmenite and titanaugite and its functional mechanism

Yusheng Du et al.

Summary: The influence of changing the adding order of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and sodium oleate (NaOL) on the flotation of ilmenite and titanaugite was investigated. The experiments showed that adding NaOL first improved the recovery of ilmenite and reduced the recovery of titanaugite, while decreasing the dosage of H2SO4. Analysis indicated that the total ions caused by H2SO4 prevented the adsorption of NaOL on ilmenite surfaces, but had little effect on titanaugite. However, when NaOL was added first, it weakened the dissolution of H2SO4 on ilmenite surfaces, but was destroyed by the dissolution of H2SO4 on titanaugite surfaces. Therefore, altering the adding order of H2SO4 and NaOL reinforced the adsorption difference of NaOL on ilmenite and titanaugite surfaces. This was supported by contact angle, zeta potential, and AFM analyses.

Flotation and adsorption characteristics of albite and quartz with oleic acid-based collector

Savas Ozun et al.

Summary: The separation of feldspars from quartz is challenging due to their similar physical and surface properties. This study aimed to determine the flotation behavior and adsorption characteristics of both minerals using an oleic acid-based collector. The results showed that the collector-treated albite exhibited stronger adsorption FTIR bands compared to quartz, and selective flotation recovery was observed in an alkaline environment. AFM analysis further revealed different adsorption patches on collector-treated albite, indicating collector adsorption, while quartz showed no/low collector interaction.

Effect of goethite (& alpha;-FeOOH) nanoparticles on the surface properties and flotation behavior of chalcopyrite

Gde Pandhe Wisnu Suyantara et al.

Summary: Chalcopyrite flotation can be selectively depressed by oxidation treatment. The presence of ferric oxyhydroxide on the surface of chalcopyrite after oxidation treatment is a key factor in depressing chalcopyrite flotation. Goethite (α-FeOOH) nanoparticles were found to physically adsorb on the chalcopyrite surface and render it hydrophilic, thereby reducing the chalcopyrite flotation recovery.

Separation mechanism of ilmenite from titanaugite with mixed BHA/NaOL collector

Qingyou Meng et al.

Summary: The mixed BHA/NaOL surfactant was found to have a higher floatability for ilmenite compared to titanaugite, achieving 86.50% recovery and 39.42% TiO2 grade in artificially mixed mineral experiments. Results from zeta potential, AFM, and XPS analyses showed that the mixed BHA/NaOL interacted with specific active sites on the ilmenite surface, forming a stable hydrophobic layer. Simulation results indicated that the collectors substituted water molecules on the ilmenite surface, contributing to the floatability difference between ilmenite and titanaugite.
