Kinetics studies of methane hydrate formation and dissociation in the presence of cyclopentane

Yi-Song Yu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the kinetic of methane hydrate formation in the presence of cyclopentane. The results show that high gas uptake hydrates formed at relatively low temperatures can be stored and transported at relatively high temperatures, providing a cost-effective method for hydrate storage and transportation.

Experimental Investigation to Quantify Gas Hydrate Formation during Shutdown in the Wellbore Near the Wellhead: Impact of Thermodynamic Inhibitors

Yohan Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, the deposition kinetics and morphology of methane hydrates were investigated at 10 MPa. It was found that non-volatile thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors (THIs) were ineffective in preventing hydrate formation near the wellhead, while volatile THIs could prevent hydrate deposition even under cold conditions. However, volatile THIs only delayed the growth of hydrate deposits in warm wellheads. The study provides insight into better management strategies for THI usage to mitigate hydrate blockage risk near the wellhead.

High pressure micromechanical force method to assess the non-plugging potential of crude oils and the detection of asphaltene-hydrate mixed agglomerates

Nur Aminatulmimi Ismail et al.

Summary: A hydrate prevention strategy using crude oil with hydrate non-plugging tendency is a viable option in oilfield production or transient operations. Accurate evaluation of crude oils for their potential as non-plugging oils before large-scale testing is important. The HP-MMF method provides insights into natural anti-agglomerants in crude oils and can assess their non-plugging potential conveniently at realistic conditions.

Challenges and progress on ethane hydrates rheology under high pressure

Ana C. G. A. Rebello et al.

Summary: This research investigates the formation of ethane gas hydrates in water-in-model oil emulsions. The results show that increasing the subcooling, water cut, and shear rate can reduce the induction period of the hydrates. The amount of water converted to hydrate can be estimated by analyzing the viscosity and pressure curves.

Rheology of Cyclopentane sII Hydrate Slurry in Water-in-Model Oil Emulsions: Effect of Surfactant Concentration and Water Droplet Size Relevant for Flow Assurance

Jitendra S. Sangwai et al.

Summary: Investigating the effects of surfactant concentration and droplet size distribution on the rheology of water-in-oil emulsion systems is important for understanding the antiagglomeration properties and finding suitable strategies for flow assurance issues. This study focuses on the rheological characterization of hydrate slurries with a mixed surfactant system and demonstrates that the presence of surfactants can increase the viscosity of the slurries up to a certain concentration, but higher concentrations can reduce viscosity and act as antiagglomerants.

Rheological Characterization and Formation Protocol of Tetrahydrofuran Hydrate Slurries

Icaro Coelho et al.

Summary: The main flow assurance problem in the oil industry is the formation of gas hydrates in high pressure and low temperature conditions. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is commonly used to mimic gas hydrates. This study investigates the rheological properties and behavior of THF, finding different outcomes for different mass concentrations and differing from previous literature.

Outlook on the Role of Natural Surfactants on Emulsion Stability and Gas Hydrate Antiagglomeration in Crude Oil Systems

Jose G. Delgado-Linares et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates are a significant issue in oil and gas transportation as they can block flowlines and reduce hydrocarbon production. To mitigate this, surfactant-like molecules are used to prevent the agglomeration of hydrate particles. Some crude oils naturally have anti-agglomeration properties due to the presence of surfactants. Understanding the concentration and interfacial activity of these natural surfactants is crucial in understanding the anti-agglomeration process.

A Rheological Study of Parameters That Influence the Formation of Cyclopentane Hydrates

Gustavo A. B. Sandoval et al.

Summary: This work presents a rheological analysis of cyclopentane hydrates formed in water-in-oil emulsions, investigating the influence of parameters such as pretreatment temperatures and cooling/heating rates. The study shows that the resulting hydrate slurry exhibits elasticity and shear thinning behavior, likely caused by breakdown of hydrate structures and alignment of hydrate agglomerates to the flow.

Rheological Properties of Hydrate Slurry in the Water-Based Drilling Fluid

Guilherme Muhlstedt et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates may form in deep-water drilling operations when light compounds flow into the wellbore due to a kick. By inducing hydrate formation with tetrahydrofuran in water-based drilling fluid, researchers found that the resulting hydrate slurry is a time-dependent elastoviscoplastic material with irreversible microstructural changes under shear. The study also revealed that the hydrate slurry exhibits different rheological properties depending on whether it is formed statically or dynamically.
