Conversion of polyethylene terephthalate waste into high-yield porous carbon adsorbent via pyrolysis of dipotassium terephthalate

M. N. Efimov et al.

Summary: A method for converting PET waste into porous carbon material was proposed, which involves low-temperature hydrolysis and subsequent pyrolysis. The PET hydrolysis was achieved by pre-dissolving the polymer in dimethyl sulfoxide and adding an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide. The alkaline hydrolysis resulted in the formation of potassium terephthalate, which allowed for further activation. This method led to the formation of porous carbon material with high yield and adsorption capacity for pollutants.

Zeolite shape selectivity impact on LDPE and PP catalytic pyrolysis products and coke nature

Md M. Hasan et al.

Summary: Catalytic pyrolysis of plastic waste offers an economical and efficient way to convert plastic waste into high-quality products. The experiment showed that different zeolite catalysts have different effects on the conversion mechanism of plastic waste. The polymer structures and secondary reactions play important roles in product distribution, while the physicochemical properties and coke composition of zeolite catalysts are related to their deactivation processes.

Rapid alcoholysis of PET enhanced by its swelling under high temperature

Pengtao Fang et al.

Summary: The development of catalysts with high thermal stability, high catalytic activity, and high cycling performance is crucial in PET alcoholysis research. In this study, the researchers achieved rapid and complete degradation of PET by utilizing the high specific surface area and numerous pores formed by PET swelling at high temperatures. The polyoxometalate (POM) catalysts not only provided a multi-active site microenvironment but also allowed for the recycling of the catalyst over 30 times.

Development of a continuous PET depolymerization process as a basis for a back-to-monomer recycling method

Lars Biermann et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method for efficiently recycling bilayered PET waste with a depolymerization degree exceeding 97%. By converting complex PET waste into valuable starting materials, this method supports the implementation of a circular PET economy. Increasing mechanical agitation can compensate for shorter residence time to achieve similar degrees of depolymerization.

Chemolytic depolymerisation of PET: a review

Elaine Barnard et al.

Summary: Developing new methods for plastic recycling is crucial for reducing CO2 emissions and improving resource efficiency. Chemical recycling, which involves depolymerization to reclaim original components, is gaining attention as a viable route. Lowering the energy barrier for depolymerization through catalysts under mild conditions is a key focus of research in this field.
