The global burden of metabolic disease: Data from 2000 to 2019

Nicholas W. S. Chew et al.

Summary: Global estimates from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 reveal increasing prevalence rates for metabolic diseases, particularly in high socio-demographic index countries. While mortality rates have decreased for some metabolic diseases, such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, rates remain unchanged for type 2 diabetes mel-litus and obesity. The highest mortality rates are observed in the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean region and low to low-middle socio-demographic index countries.

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) level, but not ACE gene polymorphism, is associated with prognosis of COVID-19 infection: Implications for diabetes and hypertension

Onur Elbasan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between ACE levels, ACE gene polymorphism, T2DM, HT, and the prognosis of COVID-19 infection. Higher ACE levels were associated with worsened prognosis, while ACE gene polymorphism and the use of ACEi/ARB or DPP4i were not related to the prognosis.

DNA Methylation of the Angiotensinogen Gene, AGT, and the Aldosterone Synthase Gene, CYP11B2 in Cardiovascular Diseases

Yoshimichi Takeda et al.

Summary: DNA methylation regulates the expression of AGT and CYP11B2, impacting the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. The methylation status of key genes is influenced by factors such as high salt intake, aldosterone levels, and angiotensin II, leading to changes in gene expression and DNA-binding activity of transcription factors. These epigenetic mechanisms play a crucial role in regulating blood pressure and cardiovascular health.
