Letting a Picture Speak a Thousand Words: Arts-based Research in a Study of the Careers of Female Academics

Fleur Sharafizad et al.

Summary: This article presents the adaptation of an arts-based research method for child-focused research to examine organizational processes. The researchers developed a new method called Draw, Write, Reflect (DWR) to investigate adults engaging in academic careers. By combining visual and oral methods, the researchers obtained individualized data and multidimensional insights that would not have been possible with each method alone. Furthermore, the article argues that arts-based research can disseminate academic work to a nonacademic audience.

A Visual and Sensory Participatory Methodology to Explore Social Perceptions: A Case Study of the San Vittore Prison in Milan, Italy

Lorenzo Natali et al.

Summary: This passage discusses a new range of visual and sensory strategies as an alternative mode of knowledge in criminology, drawing on data from a pilot study at San Vittore Prison in Milan. It explores the potential, utility, and limitations of a visual and mobile participatory methodology for investigating perceptions and expectations regarding the presence of prison in urban environments. The use of qualitative interviews with mental images and itinerant soliloquies is detailed, emphasizing the potential of drawing and multisensory walking to reveal overlooked perspectives and narratives about prison.
