Understanding Systemic Racism: Anti-Blackness, White Supremacy, Racial Capitalism, and the Re/Creation of White Space and Time

Summary: In this article, the authors use a racial-spatial framework to explain systemic racism, which is characterized by the interlocking nature of anti-Blackness, white supremacy, and racial capitalism. The framework highlights how institutional inequities, perpetuated through private property, advantage white people while displacing and dispossessing Black and non-Black people of Color. By reclaiming space and time, marginalized communities can challenge systemic racism and elevate their lived experiences. The authors urge counseling psychology researchers, educators, and practitioners to critically examine their own positions within the system and actively contribute to countering systemic racism through the creation of inclusive and healing spaces.

Racial Capitalism and Social Psychology: A Note for Future Research

Summary: In this research note, we discuss the significance of racial capitalism theories in understanding various social psychological processes such as racial discrimination and stereotyping. Firstly, the racial capitalism framework helps illuminate the influence of material conditions on aspects of racial domination and oppression, including the formation of identity. Secondly, racial capitalism thinkers have highlighted the instrumentalization of racial identity and differentiation by capitalism for accumulation. Thirdly, racial capitalism emphasizes the importance of intersectionality in understanding the social-structural factors that shape the social psychological experiences and effects of discrimination for marginalized racial groups. Social psychologists should integrate these insights into their investigations on race and racism.
