Graph isomorphism-based algorithm for cross-checking chemical and crystallographic descriptions

Andrius Merkys et al.

Summary: This publication presents a method to cross-check chemical descriptions using a canonical representation and isomorphism of molecular graphs. The algorithm derives the minimal set of simplifications required for both descriptions to arrive at a matching form. It is used to identify coherently described entries and those requiring further curation in the Crystallography Open Database.

Proving the correctness of the algorithm for building a crystallographic space group

Karolis Petrauskas et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the application of formal verification in the crystallographic domain to ensure the correctness of scientific data processing software. By writing pseudocode, formulating theories, proving algorithm properties, and implementing the algorithm, the researchers present the formal proof and semi-formal algorithm analysis. It is argued that broader application of formal methods can enhance the reliability of scientific software, and the formalized domain-specific theory can be reused and gradually extended to increase the automation level of formal algorithm verification.

Symmetry and chirality in crystals

Massimo Nespolo et al.

Summary: A classification scheme linking the chirality of molecules to the type of crystal structures they may form is presented, with corrections and extensions made to similar classifications proposed in the past. The article addresses cases of chiral crystal structures formed from achiral molecules and includes examples of scalemic enantioenriched solutions that are absent from most classifications. In addition, chiral crystal structures from purely inorganic compounds are also explored.
