Replicability in Lithic Analysis

Justin Pargeter et al.

Summary: The ubiquity and durability of lithic artifacts provide insights into human behavioral variability. However, studying lithic artifacts can be challenging due to differences in theoretical approaches and data collection methods among analysts. This study addresses this issue by conducting an extensive lithic replicability study involving 11 analysts and various attributes. The results demonstrate strong inter-analyst replicability scores, highlighting reliable attributes for comparative studies.

Merging morphological and genetic evidence to assess hybridization in Western Eurasian late Pleistocene hominins

K. Harvati et al.

Summary: Genetic evidence suggests repeated interbreeding between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens in Europe. This study examines the late Pleistocene fossil record in Europe, particularly focusing on the skull, to understand how this interbreeding might be reflected. Previous scientific consensus saw human evolution as defined by adaptive differences and the replacement of non-modern groups by modern humans. However, recent research has shown that the process was more complex, with gene flow occurring repeatedly between different lineages. The study provides an introduction to the genetic evidence for hybridization among hominins and explores how this manifests in the skull. The findings suggest a correspondence between cranial variation and genetic data, indicating possible admixture in individual fossils.
