Index Admission Cholecystectomy and Recurrence of Pediatric Gallstone Pancreatitis: Multicenter Cohort Analysis

Armando S. Munoz Abraham et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the recurrence rates of gallstone pancreatitis in children undergoing early or interval cholecystectomy. The results showed that early cholecystectomy reduces the risk of recurrent pancreatitis, while delayed surgery increases the recurrence rate.

Association of Race and Family Socioeconomic Status With Pediatric Postoperative Mortality

Brittany L. Willer et al.

Summary: Increasing family SES was associated with lower pediatric postoperative mortality in this cohort study. However, postoperative mortality rates were significantly higher among Black children in the highest SES category compared with White children in the same category, and mortality rates among Black children in the highest SES category were comparable to those of White children in the lowest SES category. This suggests that interventions targeting socioeconomic inequities alone may not fully address persistent racial disparities in pediatric postoperative mortality.

A Multicenter Randomized Prospective Study of Early Cholecystectomy for Pediatric Patients with Biliary Colic

Kai Gao et al.

Summary: The study showed that early laparoscopic cholecystectomy is effective in children with biliary colic, providing beneficial outcomes in terms of both short-term symptom improvement and long-term relief. Within a 6-month period, patients who underwent early cholecystectomy had higher rates of being colic-free and lower rates of acute readmissions compared to those who received conservative management.

Cholelithiasis and cholecystitis in children and adolescents: Does this increasing diagnosis require a common guideline for pediatricians and pediatric surgeons?

Sonja Diez et al.

Summary: The management of pediatric cholelithiasis varies between hospitals and between pediatricians and pediatric surgeons. A nationwide survey in Germany revealed that pediatric medical management is primarily confirmed by respondents, but within the acute cholecystitis cases, a minority perform cholecystectomy within 24 hours after diagnosis. Evidence-based large-scale population studies and a common guideline are important tools for treating the increasing diagnosis of pediatric cholelithiasis.

Cutting out Cholecystectomy on Index Hospitalization Leads to Increased Readmission Rates, Morbidity, Mortality and Cost

Karthik Gangu et al.

Summary: Untreated biliary tract diseases during hospitalization can lead to worse outcomes. Our study reveals that postponing definitive management to a subsequent visit is associated with higher 30-day readmission rates, increased mortality rates, and added financial burden for patients.
