Narratives of internal audit: The Sisyphean work of becoming independent

Summary: Based on a study of the Internal Audit Department at the Swedish Police Authority, this text provides insights into the everyday work of internal auditors and how they manage to be independent in an organization they are a part of. The narrative framework and analysis reveal that the pursuit of internal audit independence can become a tragic plot due to emotional work, ambiguous authority, and efforts to navigate paradoxes in their practice.
