Risk Factors for Complications Following Staged Alveolar Ridge Augmentation and Dental Implantation: A Retrospective Evaluation of 151 Cases with Allogeneic and 70 Cases with Autogenous Bone Blocks

Frank R. Kloss et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify potential risk factors for complications related to alveolar ridge augmentation using bone blocks. The study found that complications were more frequent with autogenous bone blocks compared to allogeneic bone blocks, but these complications were minor and did not affect the success of dental rehabilitation.

Clinical and radiographic outcomes of customized allogeneic bone block versus autogenous bone block for ridge augmentation: 6 Month results of a randomized controlled clinical trial

Maoxia Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of customized allogeneic bone block (CABB) compared with autogenous bone block (ABB) for ridge augmentation. The results showed that the use of CABBs resulted in more horizontal bone gain and less horizontal bone resorption at 1 mm below the alveolar ridge crest compared with ABBs.

Bone reconstruction of extensive maxillomandibular defects in adults

Peer W. Kaemmerer et al.

Summary: Reconstruction of significant maxillomandibular defects is a challenging task that requires careful consideration of various factors such as bone viability, graft immobilization, material choice, and surgical techniques. Different approaches like using meshes or shells for stabilizing grafts or utilizing autologous bone blocks may be employed depending on the extent of the defect. Microvascular reconstruction with the free fibula flap has emerged as the standard of care for more extensive defects, while alternative methods like alloplastic reconstruction and distraction osteogenesis are still being developed. Three-dimensional planning tools play a vital role in facilitating the planning and execution of these complex procedures.

Comparison of morbidity-related parameters between autologous and allogeneic bone grafts for alveolar ridge augmentation from patients' perspective-A questionnaire-based cohort study

Diana Heimes et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared morbidity-related parameters after alveolar ridge augmentation using autogenous and allogeneic bone blocks from patients' perspective. The results showed that the rate of nerve irritations was twice as high in the autologous group, and swelling was significantly higher in patients with autologous bone blocks. However, the overall satisfaction of patients in both groups was very high, with over 8/10 points.

Summary: The study evaluated the influence of rehydration time on the biomechanical properties of cortical bone plates in terms of breaking strength and flexibility. The results showed that a rehydration time of 10 minutes significantly improved the biomechanical properties, which could be clinically relevant.

Istvan A. Urban et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the clinical effectiveness of a titanium-reinforced PTFE mesh for vertical bone augmentation in deficient alveolar ridges. Results showed that the procedure was safe and predictable, with the extent of baseline deficiency influencing the percentage of bone gained. Location of defects had a statistically significant but limited impact on bone height gained.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of perforating the cortex of the recipient site on cancellous allogeneic block graft integration and revascularization in the maxilla. The results showed that perforating the cortex of the recipient site did not have a significant effect on angiogenesis and bone formation within the block graft.
