Evolutionary assessment of the rove beetle subfamily Proteininae Erichson, 1839 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) triggered by the X-ray based description of its first fossil in Baltic amber from Denmark

Josh Jenkins Shaw et al.

Summary: This study reviews the taxonomic composition, phylogeny, ecology, biology, behaviour, and fossil record of Proteininae subfamily. It presents the first Eocene fossil specimen from Baltic amber, assigning it to the genus Proteinus. The study suggests that the subfamily Proteininae dates back to at least the mid-Cretaceous, but its species-rich lineages may be younger.

Paraphloeostiba dominicana sp. nov.: The first omaliine rove beetle from Dominican amber (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Omaliinae)

Josh Jenkins Shaw et al.

Summary: A new species of rove beetle from mid-Miocene Dominican amber is described. It is the first species of the subfamily Omaliinae from this fossil deposit and represents a previously unknown genus in the Neotropics. The morphology of the new species, including the male genitalia, was studied using X-ray micro-computed tomography. Its characteristics were compared with extant and extinct species of the genus Paraphloeostiba. The possibility of finding this genus in the recent Neotropical fauna is discussed.

Summary: This study provides new taxonomic and faunistic data for four species of the genus Mannerheimia Maklin, 1880 from India, Nepal, and China. Two new species from the Himalayan Region are described and their distribution maps are provided. Faunistic and diagnostic data for several species of Omaliinae Macleay, 1825 from the Eastern Palaearctic Region are also given. Additionally, new diagnostic data for two species and depositories for three species of the genus Anthobium Leach, 1819 are clarified. The modified distributional maps for certain species are provided and several species are recorded from specific areas for the first time.
