Changes in Body Mass and Movement Strategy Maintain Jump Height Immediately after Soccer Match

Ryan Spencer et al.

Summary: A countermovement jump (CMJ) is commonly used in soccer to assess acute neuromuscular fatigue (NMF); however, jump height (JH) may be affected by changes in movement strategy and body mass (BM). This study investigated the impact of a soccer match on JH, movement strategy, and BM to inform future research on acute NMF. Results showed non-significant changes in JH, a decrease in BM, and moderate decreases in jump momentum and countermovement depth.

Mental fatigue and technical performance in elite rugby league

Yleia Mariano et al.

Summary: The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of elite rugby league competition on mental fatigue and to investigate the influence of mental fatigue on in-match technical performance. The findings showed that elite rugby league players experienced increased mental fatigue after games, with backs reporting greater increases than forwards. Furthermore, higher levels of mental fatigue were associated with a lower percentage of positive involvements during matches.

Postural Control Responses to Different Acute and Chronic Training Load Profiles in Professional Rugby Union

Jordan C. Troester et al.

Summary: This study investigated the postural control responses of professional rugby union players to different training load profiles. The results showed that landing impulse significantly increased in spike and higher load profiles, while single-leg balance and landing time to stabilization were not affected by load profiles. These responses may indicate altered movement strategies resulting from neuromuscular fatigue.

Custom-Fitted Compression Garments Enhance Recovery From Muscle Damage in Rugby Players

Freddy Brown et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of custom-fitted compression garments (CG) on recovery from muscle damage in rugby players. The results showed that custom-fitted CG improved strength recovery and indices of muscle damage in rugby players, compared with controls and standard-sized garments. Therefore, athletes and coaches are advised to use appropriately fitted CG to enhance strength recovery after damaging exercise.

Profiling the Post-match Recovery Response in Male Rugby: A Systematic Review

Hendrickus G. J. Aben et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the post-match recovery response in male rugby players. The findings suggest that it takes approximately 72 hours for neuromuscular, biochemical and endocrine, and subjective/perceptual responses to return to baseline after competitive rugby match-play. The lack of research focusing on ecologically valid scenarios and youth players highlights the need for further investigation.

The relationship between physiological and performance variables during a hot/humid international rugby sevens tournament

Stephen P. Fenemor et al.

Summary: Physiological responses of elite men's rugby sevens athletes competing in a hot/humid international tournament were characterized by measuring core temperature and predictors. Post-game core temperature was found to be related to playing minutes, total running distance, and post warm-up temperature. Practitioners should adjust warm-up and heat preparation strategies based on environmental conditions during tournaments.

Summary: This study aimed to assess autonomic nervous system changes in elite rugby players during in-season microcycles. The results showed significant differences in ANS indices and wellness measures between match day and match day + 1. Furthermore, the ANS responses on match day + 3 were significantly greater than MD + 1, with wellness recovering at a slower pace than ANS responses.

Quantifying Fatigue in the Rugby Codes: The Interplay Between Collision Characteristics and Neuromuscular Performance, Biochemical Measures, and Self-Reported Assessments of Fatigue

Mitchell Naughton et al.

Summary: The locomotor and collision actions in rugby matches result in significant fatigue and delayed recovery for players. Neuromuscular performance is negatively affected post-match, with increased biomarkers of muscular damage and inflammation, showing the largest differences at 12-36 hours after the match. The variations in recovery responses are strongly related to collision frequency and intensity, highlighting the importance of considering both subjective and objective metrics for post-match recovery in rugby.

Influence of Contextual Factors, Technical Performance, and Movement Demands on the Subjective Task Load Associated With Professional Rugby League Match-Play

Thomas Mullen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the association between various contextual factors, technical performance, and external movement demands with the subjective task load of elite rugby league players. The results showed that tackles, errors, decelerations, sprint distance, match outcome, and perception of effort were linked to increases in subjective total task load. Furthermore, subjective mental demand was found to be related to match outcome, time played, and number of accelerations, with a possible small correlation with technical errors.

Fuel for the Damage Induced: Untargeted Metabolomics in Elite Rugby Union Match Play

James F. Hudson et al.

Summary: This study used untargeted metabolomics to investigate metabolic fluctuations caused by competitive rugby, revealing that high-intensity sports meet acute energy needs through glycolysis, the TCA cycle, and gluconeogenesis. During the recovery period after matches, re-entry into gluconeogenesis is observed along with markers of oxidative stress, structural protein degradation, and reduced fatty acid metabolism.
