Summary: This study evaluated the effect of operative extent on the recurrence-free survival of patients with multifocal papillary thyroid cancer. The results showed that thyroid lobectomy had comparable recurrence-free survival to total thyroidectomy, and both surgical options were effective for patients with multifocal PTC and other high-risk factors.

Summary: This study suggests that in patients with preoperatively detected unilateral multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma, factors such as extranodal extension, lymph node metastasis, and lymphovascular invasion are significantly associated with locoregional recurrence. Lobectomy may be considered as an alternative treatment to total thyroidectomy for patients with diameters less than 2 cm, even in the presence of risk factors.
