Association of Total Thyroidectomy or Thyroid Lobectomy With the Quality of Life in Patients With Differentiated Thyroid Cancer With Low to Intermediate Risk of Recurrence

Wanna Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the HRQOL of patients with DTC undergoing different surgeries longitudinally, and found that there was no significant association between the extent of surgery and HRQOL in patients with low to intermediate risk of recurrence. TL surgery may be preferred if better HRQOL is requested in the short term.

Optimal Surgical Extent in Patients with Unilateral Multifocal Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Joohyun Woo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of operative extent on the recurrence-free survival of patients with multifocal papillary thyroid cancer. The results showed that thyroid lobectomy had comparable recurrence-free survival to total thyroidectomy, and both surgical options were effective for patients with multifocal PTC and other high-risk factors.

Complication Rates of Total Thyroidectomy vs Hemithyroidectomy for Treatment of Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Vivian Hsiao et al.

Summary: This study compared the surgical complication rates between total thyroidectomy (TT) and hemithyroidectomy (HT) for the treatment of papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMC). Patients undergoing HT had lower risks of temporary vocal fold paralysis, temporary hypoparathyroidism, and permanent hypoparathyroidism compared to those undergoing TT.

Recurrence-free survival after total thyroidectomy and lobectomy in patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma

M. van Gerwen et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis demonstrates excellent long-term recurrence-free survival following both total thyroidectomy and lobectomy in patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. It also suggests that patients undergoing total thyroidectomy have a slightly better 10-year recurrence-free survival compared to patients undergoing lobectomy.

The appropriateness of thyroid lobectomy as an initial surgery for preoperatively detected unilateral multifocal papillary carcinoma

Loai Saleh Albinsaad et al.

Summary: This study suggests that in patients with preoperatively detected unilateral multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma, factors such as extranodal extension, lymph node metastasis, and lymphovascular invasion are significantly associated with locoregional recurrence. Lobectomy may be considered as an alternative treatment to total thyroidectomy for patients with diameters less than 2 cm, even in the presence of risk factors.

Association of Multifocality With Prognosis of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Summary: This study found that multifocality was significantly associated with an increased risk of recurrence in patients with PTC, while cancer-specific survival showed no difference. Differences in tumor size, number of tumor foci, and patient age should be considered when interpreting the multifocality and the risk of recurrence.

Summary: UMPTC patients are more likely to have CLNM, LLNM, more advanced TNM stage, and recurrence/persistence than UUPTC patients. Compared with UUPTC, UMPTC patients should undergo central lymph node dissection, and pay more attention to LLNM, TNM stage, and recurrence/persistence during the follow-up.
