Particulate matter (PM) oxidative potential: Measurement methods and links to PM physicochemical characteristics and health effects

Linchen He et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the pathophysiologic pathway linking particulate matter (PM) exposure and adverse health effects, specifically the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The article focuses on the oxidative potential (OP) of PM, which refers to the capacity of PM to oxidize molecules in biological tissues or cells. The review suggests that cellular assays are better at reflecting the actions of PM in a biological system compared to acellular assays. Short-term exposure to PM OP has been associated with adverse cardiorespiratory health outcomes, but the health effects of long-term exposure and beyond the cardiovascular and respiratory systems are not well-known. The existing evidence may be sufficient to support the use of PM OP as a more health-relevant exposure metric than conventional PM mass concentration, but critical methodologic issues need to be addressed.

Role of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor and Oxidative Stress in the Regioselective Toxicities of Hydroxychrysenes in Embryonic Japanese Medaka (Oryzias latipes)

Philip Tanabe et al.

Summary: Oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (oxy-PAHs) are environmental contaminants that can cause anemia and mortality in embryonic Japanese medaka. The toxicity of 2-hydroxychrysene (2-OHCHR) is mediated by aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation and oxidative stress. AhR inhibition and antioxidant treatment can mitigate the toxic effects of 2-OHCHR.

Summary: This study measured the concentrations of PM2.5 and 11 metals in urban and rural kindergartens in the Upper Silesia Region, Poland. The results showed that the health impacts on children from exposure to PM2.5 were lower compared to the impacts from exposure to metals. The health impacts varied by season and site.

Household Air Pollution Concentrations after Liquefied Petroleum Gas Interventions in Rural Peru: Findings from a One-Year Randomized Controlled Trial Followed by a One-Year Pragmatic Crossover Trial

Magdalena Fandino-Del-Rio et al.

Summary: This study aimed to measure the effect of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) interventions on household air pollution (HAP) exposures from biomass fuel combustion in Puno, Peru. The study found that providing free LPG stoves, continuous fuel delivery, regular behavioral messaging, and vouchers for LPG fuel can reduce HAP to levels below World Health Organization air quality guidelines. Furthermore, the effects of the intervention on HAP persisted for a year after fuel delivery stopped.

Maternal exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and child's cognitive, language, and motor function: ECLIPSES study

Lucia Iglesias-Vazquez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of prenatal exposure to air pollution on a child's cognitive, language, and motor functions. The results showed that all assessed air pollutants, except PM2.5 absorbance, were associated with lower motor function in children, while no association was observed between prenatal exposure to air pollution and cognitive and language functions.

The association of chemical composition particularly the heavy metals with the oxidative potential of ambient PM2.5 in a megacity (Guangzhou) of southern China

Yihang Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the oxidative potential (OP) of PM2.5 in Guangzhou, China and explored the correlations between OP and various chemical components. The results showed that water-soluble heavy metals were the major contributors to PM2.5 OP, while organic carbon (OC) explained the variance of OP. These findings provide a better understanding of the critical components in urban PM2.5 and potential synergism responsible for health effects.

The oxidative potential of particulate matter (PM) in different regions around the world and its relation to air pollution sources

Vahid Jalali Farahani et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of urban emission sources on the chemical composition and oxidative potential of ambient particulate matter (PM). The results show that PM samples from different emission sources have distinctive characteristics, with PM from biomass burning and secondary organic aerosols having the highest oxidative potential. In contrast, areas with high metal emissions, such as dust storms, refineries, and industrial areas, exhibit low oxidative potential.

Summary: This review examines the utility of three alternative in vivo animal models (zebrafish, nematode, and fruit fly) in particulate matter (PM) toxicity research. These models, with their distinct biology and exposure methods, have been widely used in recent years to assess the toxicity of various PM sources. They have played an important role in PM toxicity assessment and mechanistic research.

Regional Policies Targeting Residential Solid Fuel and Agricultural Emissions Can Improve Air Quality and Public Health in the Greater Bay Area and Across China

Luke Conibear et al.

Summary: The study reveals that air pollution exposure is a significant public health issue in China, primarily driven by PM2.5 exposure, but recent emission reductions have shown some benefits. Reductions in residential solid fuel use and agricultural fertilizer emissions can lead to decreased PM2.5 exposure and significant health benefits.

Developmental toxicity induced by particulate matter (PM2.5) in zebrafish (Danio rerio) model

Bangeppagari Manjunatha et al.

Summary: Research shows that exposure to PM2.5 leads to increased mortality, reduced hatching rates, lower heart rates, and various developmental abnormalities in zebrafish. It also causes damage in skin cell layers, abnormalities in neurons, heart, liver, gills, brain, and eyes, and increased organelle dissolution at cellular/subcellular levels. Further investigation is needed to understand the specific elements in diesel pollution that contribute to this toxicity.
