Fractures characterization of carbonate reservoir using core analyses and borehole image logs

Ibrahem Yousef et al.

Summary: This research characterizes fractures in the Judea Formation using a combination of available data. The limestone zone has more induced fractures compared to the dolomite zone, while the dolomite zone has frequent naturally occurring fractures that are open or partially filled. The fractures in the limestone zone are primarily caused by fracture of the limestone matrix and plastic deformation of the soft carbonate host rocks, while the fractures in the dolomite zone are primarily associated with dolomitization processes.

An efficient workflow for meshing large scale discrete fracture networks for solving subsurface flow problems

Mayur Pal et al.

Summary: A large percentage of subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs are characterized by the presence of small to large scale fractures, making modeling challenging. Traditional approaches are not suitable for modeling complex fracture systems, necessitating an efficient gridding technique for accurate representation of fracture networks.

Topological analysis of fault network in naturally fractured reservoirs: A case study from the pre-salt section of the Santos Basin, Brazil

Luiza de C. Mendes et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the fault topology in the Santos Basin and reveals the control of faults on hydrocarbon migration and sediment deposition. The results show that the fault networks have isolated branches and low connectivity, indicating limited impact on fluid flow. However, the paleotopographic highs formed during the Rift phase have higher fault density and intensity, contributing to increased reservoir connectivity.

Mechanical behavior of carbonate reservoirs with single karst cavities

Pedro A. L. P. Firme et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the mechanical behavior of karstified carbonate reservoirs in a synthetic case study based on a Brazilian basin. Results show that the horizontal extension of the cavity and compressibility of the filling material are crucial for reservoir integrity, with qualitative results beneficial for the oil and gas industry. These findings will guide further advanced analyses.

The challenging carbonates from the Pre-Salt reservoirs offshore Brazil: facies, palaeoenvironment and diagenesis

Ana C. Azeredo et al.

Summary: The Santos Basin in offshore Brazil is part of the major carbonate reservoir province called the Pre-Salt. The analysis of cores, plugs, sidewall samples and thin-sections from two wells revealed various facies and subfacies types of carbonate rocks, which have been classified independently from existing terminologies. These facies include different depositional and diagenetic characteristics, impacting the reservoir facies properties and quality.
