Multifunctional Hybrid Interfacial Layers for High-Performance Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Benfang Niu et al.

Summary: A simple and scalable interfacial strategy is reported to facilitate the assembly of high-performance inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and scale-up modules. This strategy improves the chemical stability, charge extraction, and energy level alignment of the hole-selective interface, while promoting perovskite crystallization. As a result, the corresponding inverted PSCs and modules achieve remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 24.5% and 20.7% (aperture area of 19.4 cm(2)), respectively. This strategy is also effective for perovskite with various bandgaps, demonstrating the highest PCE of 19.6% for the 1.76-eV bandgap PSCs.

Recent Advances in Functionalized Fullerenes in Perovskite Solar Cells

Min Ai et al.

Summary: Efficient charge transport and defect passivation are crucial for high efficiency of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Functionalized fullerenes, with high electron affinity and mobility, have been extensively used in PSCs to improve electron transport and passivate trap states, leading to enhanced device efficiency and stability. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in the application of functionalized fullerenes in PSCs, discussing their functions in trap state passivation, electron transport promotion, crystalline modulation, water/oxygen erosion inhibition, and more. We also highlight the novel functions of fullerenes beyond trap state passivation, and the synergistic effect of multifunctional fullerenes in improving PSC device performance and stability. Finally, we present an outlook on designing novel multifunctionalized fullerenes for highly efficient and stable PSC devices.

Reducing nonradiative recombination in perovskite solar cells with a porous insulator contact

Wei Peng et al.

Summary: Inserting an ultrathin low-conductivity interlayer between the absorber and transport layer is an effective strategy for improving the efficiency of perovskite solar cells. However, there is a trade-off between the open-circuit voltage and fill factor. In this study, the challenge was overcome by introducing a thick insulator layer with random nanoscale openings. With this approach, an efficiency of up to 25.5% was achieved, along with reduced surface recombination and improved perovskite crystallinity.

Tin Halide Perovskite Solar Cells with Open-Circuit Voltages Approaching the Shockley-Queisser Limit

Wentao Liu et al.

Summary: The power conversion efficiency of tin-based halide perovskite solar cells is limited by the energy-level offset between the perovskite and conventional electron transport material. The use of ICBA as an alternative material shows promise due to its better energy level matching with tin-based perovskites. By optimizing the choice of solvent and annealing temperature, ICBA films with improved morphology and electrical properties are fabricated. These films exhibit reduced energy disorder and result in solar cells with high open-circuit voltages and conversion efficiencies. This research highlights the importance of controlling electron transport material properties and demonstrates the potential of solvent engineering for efficient device processing.

Summary: A series of fullerene dyads were designed and used as electron transport materials in inverted perovskite solar cells. Among them, FP-C8 showed the best performance in terms of energy disorder and morphological stability. Devices using FP-C8 as the electron transport material achieved higher power conversion efficiency compared to those using traditional PCBM. Moreover, FP-C8-based devices exhibited better moisture and thermal stability.

Atomistic Mechanism of Surface-Defect Passivation: Toward Stable and Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Weiyi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the passivation effects of 2-MP and 2-MDEP on iodine vacancy MAPbI(3) were comprehensively investigated using density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that 2-MDEP showed stronger adsorption and localized charges on Pb atoms, leading to improved activation barriers for ion migrations, structural stability, and restrained nonradiative recombination. Moreover, 2-MDEP exhibited more remarkable shielding effects against moisture compared to 2-MP.
