The establishment of the association between the Japanese beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and the parasitoid Istocheta aldrichi (Diptera: Tachinidae) in Québec, Canada

Marie-Eve Gagnon et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ecological aspects of the association between the Japanese beetle and its parasitoid, Istocheta aldrichi, in the province of Quebec, Canada. The parasitoid was found to be well spread across southern Quebec and along the St. Lawrence River, where the Japanese beetle is present. The parasitism mostly occurred before the peak of the Japanese beetle populations and varied from 3.9% to 27.3% across different sites.

Insect egg morphology: evolution, development, and ecology

Seth Donoughe

Summary: This review explores the morphological diversity of insect eggs and discusses recent advances in understanding the patterns of egg evolution, cellular mechanisms underlying egg development, and notable aspects of egg ecology. It also suggests promising areas for future research on insect egg morphology, involving topics such as tissue morphogenesis, life history evolution, organismal scaling, cellular secretion, and oviposition ecology.

Parasitism of Corn Earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), by Tachinid Flies in Cultivated Hemp

Armando Falcon-Brindis et al.

Summary: Hemp has become a rapidly growing industry in the United States, but there has been relatively little research on insect pests and their interactions with natural enemies in hemp production systems. This study provides the first quantitative assessment of corn earworm (CEW) parasitism in hemp and suggests that tachinid flies hold promise as biological control agents for this important pest. The number of tachinid eggs and caterpillar body mass influenced CEW survival.
