On Sense and Preference

James Fanciullo

Summary: Determining the precise nature of the connection between preference, choice, and welfare has been a central project in welfare economics. The existing approaches seem equally incapable of guiding economists. The author argues that this deadlock is due to a failure to recognize the crucial distinction between two senses of preference. By analyzing and defending these senses of preference, the author reveals how economists should understand the connections between preference, choice, and welfare, and the proper roles of these concepts in welfare economics.

Well-Being

Donald W. Bruckner

Summary: There is a lack of theoretical discussion on non-human animal well-being in the philosophical literature on well-being. To address this, the author proposes a desire satisfaction theory of well-being for animals and contrasts this theory with a desire theory of well-being for humans. Objections to the theories, particularly regarding the variation of well-being theories across welfare subjects and the requirement of exercising sophisticated capacities for human well-being, are considered.
