Transcriptomic analysis shows the antifungal mechanism of honokiol against Aspergillus flavus

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, honokiol, a phenolic compound in Magnolia officinalis, was found to inhibit the germination and growth of Aspergillus flavus. It also showed potent antifungal activity against A. flavus in corn flour by suppressing conidia production. The study explored the mechanisms of honokiol's inhibition on A. flavus, including increased plasma membrane permeability, inhibition of ATPase activity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and accumulation of reactive oxygen species. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that honokiol treatment resulted in differentially expressed genes related to spore development, cell wall and membrane integrity, oxidative stress, and energy metabolism. These findings enhance the understanding of honokiol's antifungal activity and its potential as an agent in preventing contamination by A. flavus.

Trans-2-hexenal inhibits the growth of imazalil-resistant Penicillium digitatum Pdw03 and delays green mold in postharvest citrus

Xingxing Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of trans-2-hexenal in preventing green mold on postharvest citrus fruit and its mode of action against imazalil-resistant Penicillium digitatum Pdw03. Trans-2-hexenal inhibited Pdw03 growth at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and a minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of 0.25 mL L-1. It was found that trans-2-hexenal altered the mitochondrial structure of Pdw03, increased reactive oxygen species production, and affected the expression of energy metabolism genes. This compound also damaged ribosomes and reduced protein synthesis to achieve the inhibitory effect.

Ursolic acid, the main component of blueberry cuticular wax, inhibits Botrytis cinerea growth by damaging cell membrane integrity

Ruiling Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antifungal ability of blueberry cuticular wax and found that ursolic acid (UA) is the key compound that inhibits the growth of Botrytis cinerea. UA disrupts the cell membrane integrity of B. cinerea and stimulates the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to the suppression of fungal growth. These findings highlight the potential of UA as an agent for controlling gray mold in blueberry.

Toxicity and action mechanisms of silver nanoparticles against the mycotoxin-producing fungus Fusarium graminearum

Yunqing Jian et al.

Summary: Fusarium graminearum is a destructive fungal pathogen causing Fusarium head blight (FHB) disease in cereal crops, leading to yield loss and mycotoxin contamination. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) show effective antifungal activity against fungicide-resistant and fungicide-sensitive F. graminearum strains, while inducing ROS generation, DON biosynthesis gene expression, and mycotoxin production. AgNPs have the potential to manage FHB in combination with DON-reducing fungicides.

Antifungal activity and mechanism of thymol against Fusarium oxysporum, a pathogen of potato dry rot, and its potential application

Yanlin Liu et al.

Summary: Thymol exhibits significant antifungal effects against Fusarium oxysporum, the pathogen causing potato dry rot. It inhibits mycelial growth, reduces spore germination rate, and decreases pathogenicity and spore viability. Thymol also enhances F. oxysporum's sensitivity to environmental stresses and induces resistance in potato pieces. Additionally, it shows synergistic and additive effects with chemical fungicides. Transcriptome analysis reveals differentially expressed genes mainly related to metabolism, transport, and membranes.

Biocontrol Ability and Action Mechanism of Meyerozyma guilliermondii 37 on Soft Rot Control of Postharvest Kiwifruit

Hui Pan et al.

Summary: The study found that the strain 37 of Meyerozyma guilliermondii effectively controlled soft rot disease in kiwifruit caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea and Diaporthe actinidiae. The strain adhered to the pathogens' mycelium and quickly colonized the kiwifruit flesh. In addition, it induced kiwifruit resistance by increasing defense-related enzyme activity, antioxidant substances content, and suppressing cell wall-degrading enzyme activity.
