It's a hard-knock life for us: a multilevel analysis on the association between grade retention and being bullied in 25 countries

Timo Van Canegem et al.

Summary: School bullying is a global issue, often caused by a power imbalance between students. This study examines the association between grade retention and self-reported victimisation, finding that being retained in primary and/or secondary education is associated with higher levels of victimisation. The presence of other retainees in schools and countries also moderates this association.

Grade retention and academic self-concept: A multilevel analysis of the effects of schools' retention composition

Timo Van Canegem et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of grade retention on academic self-concept, finding that retention decreases students' academic self-concept, especially in schools with a higher retention composition. The negative association between grade retention and academic self-concept is mediated by a sense of belonging. The number of retainees within a given context does not affect the impact of being retained on academic self-concept.

Unravelling socioeconomic school composition effects on higher education enrollment: the role of students' individual and shared feelings of futility and self-efficacy

Isis Vandelannote et al.

Summary: Despite the massification of higher education, social inequality in higher education outcomes can still be attributed to the socioeconomic composition of secondary schools. This study suggests that students' feelings of academic self-efficacy and sense of futility may play a role in influencing higher education enrollment. Additionally, the presence of self-efficacy and futility cultures within schools could also impact students' decisions regarding higher education enrollment and program choice.
