Learning in digital play: a dual case study of video gamers' independent play

Summary: This paper explores the implications of youths' out-of-school gaming practices for teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Through a case study approach, the video game play of two youths was examined using user experience approaches such as the think-aloud protocol and interviews. The findings suggest that youths demonstrate critical thinking, empathy, and multimodal literacy through their gameplay. Suggestions for adults on utilizing video games for youths' learning are provided.

Digital polycentricity and diasporic connectivity: A Norwegian-Senegalese case study

Working with mediagrams: a methodology for collaborative research on mediational repertoires in multilingual families

Summary: This paper introduces mediagrams as a new method for studying transnational mediated interaction, based on an ethnographic study of multilingual communication in families with Senegalese-background in Norway. The collected data is visualized to represent individual networks of interlocutors, language choices, language modalities, and media channels, leading to the analysis of individual mediational repertoires. The research is considered a contribution to citizen sociolinguistics and its potential for wider application is discussed.
