Telehealth Evaluation of Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Disabilities During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Clinician and Caregiver Perspectives

Rebecca McNally Keehn et al.

Summary: This study investigated clinician and caregiver perspectives on telehealth neurodevelopmental evaluations during the COVID-19 pandemic, showing the effectiveness of remote evaluations, the impact of technology and family barriers, and the satisfaction levels of clinicians and caregivers. Results indicated that most cases in remote evaluations received a clinical diagnosis, with clinicians having a certain level of certainty in their diagnoses. Despite challenges, clinicians and caregivers expressed high satisfaction with various aspects of telehealth.

A scoping review of telehealth diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder

Katherine Kuhl-Meltzoff Stavropoulos et al.

Summary: This paper examines the use of telehealth for diagnosing ASD and finds that it is a feasible and effective method, with accuracy ranging from 80-91% compared to in-person diagnosis. The sensitivity values range from 75% to 100%, and specificity values range from 68.75% to 100%. The majority of caregivers, adult participants, and clinicians express satisfaction with telehealth for diagnosis. However, further research is needed to confirm the accuracy and validity of this method.

Unmasking the psychology of recognizing emotions of people wearing masks: The role of empathizing, systemizing, and autistic traits

Vijayachandra Ramachandra et al.

Summary: The use of masks due to the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted facial emotion recognition. Individuals with higher empathetic abilities are better at recognizing emotions, while those with higher autistic traits find it more challenging, regardless of mask usage. Systemizing tendencies do not have a significant impact on emotion recognition or intensity ratings.

Tele-Assessments in Rural and Remote Schools - Perspectives of Support Teachers

Marie Antoinette Hodge et al.

Summary: Tele-assessment using videoconferencing technology is a feasible method for evaluating students with reading difficulties in schools. Teachers generally had a positive view of the tele-assessment process and found it convenient and cost-effective. Students also showed good compliance and engagement. However, technical difficulties, assessment limitations, and equipment issues in schools were identified as barriers to tele-assessment.

It took a pandemic: Perspectives on impact, stress, and telehealth from caregivers of people with autism

Susan W. White et al.

Summary: The study indicates that impaired emotion regulation was a primary stressor for caregivers of individuals with ASD during the COVID-19 pandemic, while the loss of established structure and routine also contributed to parental stress. Nearly half of the caregivers sampled used telehealth for the first time, appreciating its role in continuing services but expressing concerns about effectiveness due to their children's social communication issues.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on studies published between 2012 and 2019 to determine the current average age at diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder globally. The findings showed the average age at diagnosis to be 60.48 months, with a lower average age of 43.18 months for children aged 10 or below. Various factors that may influence the age at diagnosis were reported by studies, often with conflicting or inconclusive results.

Family-Centered Care: How Close Do We Get When Talking to Parents of Children Undergoing Diagnosis for Autism Spectrum Disorders?

Lynnea Myers et al.

Summary: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects many children, but little is known about parents' perceptions of family-centered care (FCC) during the diagnostic process. A mixed-methods study found that most parents rated their receipt of FCC highly, but still experienced stress, depression, and anxiety during their child's diagnosis period. The study suggests ways for healthcare providers to enhance FCC for families during the ASD diagnosis process.
