Gender differences in cooperation across 20 societies: a meta-analysis

Giuliana Spadaro et al.

Summary: Past research has suggested gender differences in cooperation, but recent empirical research has found little-to-no evidence for such differences. This study analyzed six decades of research and did not find within-study differences in cooperation between men and women. However, cooperation was slightly higher in studies with predominantly female samples. Gender differences in cooperation did not emerge in response to conflicting interests or societal factors. The implications of these findings for understanding gender differences in cooperation are discussed.

Sustaining the potential for cooperation as female competitive strategy

Alessandra Cassar et al.

Summary: The lower female competitiveness often found in economic experiments can be explained by the strategic suppression of competitiveness in order to elicit cooperation for the benefit of raising offspring. Women show stronger reactions to social conditions in different games compared to men, and they are equally competitive when the games evoke a parenting frame, a gender-typical one, or include a prosocial option. This suggests that nurturing cooperation intertwines with competitiveness in a complex and adaptive female social strategy.
