Meta-analyses of the associations of mentalization and proxy variables with anxiety and internalizing problems

Valerie Chevalier et al.

Summary: Mentalization, the ability to detect and interpret one's own and others' mental states, has been studied in the context of clinical and developmental psychopathology. This meta-analysis examined the association between mentalization and anxiety/internalizing problems. The results showed a small negative association between mentalization and overall anxiety and internalizing symptoms. The specific outcomes varied and were moderated by the assessment methods used. Further research is needed to understand the specific mentalizing capacities related to different anxious and internalizing symptomatologies.

Tasks and Investigated Components in Social Cognition Research Among Adults With Alcohol Use Disorder: A Critical Scoping Review

Arthur Pabst et al.

Summary: This scoping review highlights the problems in the assessment procedures and scope of social cognition research in alcohol use disorder (AUD). The tasks used often do not provide clear interpretations of the social cognitive ability under investigation and fail to reflect everyday situations. Additionally, important components of social cognition, such as the ability to identify and consider social contexts and rules, have been neglected. Addressing these issues will contribute to a better understanding and treatment of severe AUD.

Faux Pas Recognition and Executive Processes in Patients with Alcohol Use Disorder: Toward an Investigation of Interindividual Heterogeneity

Franca Schmid et al.

Summary: The impairment of executive functions and theory of mind in patients with alcohol use disorders has been found to be interrelated. Based on these findings, tailored cognitive rehabilitation programs that simultaneously target both impairments could be developed to improve social inclusion and reduce the risk of relapse.

Summary: This study developed an applicable real interaction-based test to assess social cognition. The test showed high reliability and a stronger association with a more realistic video-based format compared to a less realistic paper-based format. This test can be used to assess social cognition in the general population.

Depression and alcohol use disorders as precursors to death by suicide

Jalessa Perez et al.

Summary: The coexistence of depression and alcohol abuse increases the risk of suicide. A psychological autopsy of 101 individuals who died by suicide revealed that those who met criteria for both depressive disorder and alcohol use disorder tended to be younger and experienced higher rates of stressful life events prior to their death. Alcohol abuse can contribute to interpersonal conflict, financial distress, and legal problems. Interventions that focus on managing life problems may help reduce the risk of suicide.

Do Social Cognition Deficits Recover in Alcohol-Dependent Patients With Abstinence?

Claudia I. Rupp et al.

Summary: Despite an average of nearly 2 months of abstinence, alcohol-dependent patients (ADP) showed poorer social cognition than healthy controls (HC) in emotion recognition, perspective taking, and affective responsiveness. There was no improvement in social cognition during 2+ months of abstinence, indicating persistent deficits in ADP. Further research on interventions targeting social cognition deficits and their impact on clinical outcomes in AUD is needed.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 'Systems for Social Processes' in borderline personality and substance use disorders

Lauren Hanegraaf et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on deficits in social processing in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Substance Use Disorders (SUD). The results showed significant overlapping deficits in facial emotion recognition and mental state inference in both BPD and SUD patients, with BPD patients displaying a higher ostracism effect following perceived social exclusion. This supports the idea that social processing dysfunction may be considered a core transdiagnostic phenotype of BPD and SUD.
