The impacts of soy production on multi-dimensional well-being and ecosystem services: A systematic review

Ilda Dreoni et al.

Summary: International trade in soybean has led to agricultural expansion and intensification in South America, resulting in increased GDP and average income in producing countries. However, it has also caused negative effects on local populations, such as land appropriation and social conflicts. Additionally, soybean production has been linked to deforestation, clearance of natural vegetation, and water pollution. More research is needed to fully understand the positive and negative impacts of soybean production on people and the environment.

An environmentally friendly production of ester-biolubricant from oleic acid

F. Javier Ramos et al.

Summary: The production of oleic-based trimethylolpropane (TMP) esters via esterification reaction was explored using the environmentally friendly catalyst methanesulfonic acid. The study focused on the homogeneous acid catalyst, the optimal OA/TMP molar ratio, esterification reaction enhancement, and a new purification technique. The effects of intermediate products and temperature on kinematic viscosity were investigated. The findings revealed the impact of different factors on the viscosity of the products.

Bronsted Acid Promoted Sulfenylacyloxylation of Alkynes: Access to 4-Sulfenylisocoumarins

Arijit Saha et al.

Summary: This study presents a electrophilic sulfenylacyloxylation reaction mediated by Bronsted acid (MsOH), in which alkynes are activated by in-situ formed sulfonium cations from bench-stable N-thioaryl/alkyl-succinimides, followed by intramolecular regioselective cyclization. This transformation enables the synthesis of structurally diverse 4-sulfenylisocoumarins in high yields (77-98%) with broad functional group compatibility. The reaction scalability and reusability of the phthalimide protecting group make this protocol synthetically viable.

Steryl glucosides recovered from biodiesel tank deposits are an excellent source of phytosterols

Renzo Carlucci et al.

Summary: During biodiesel production, certain byproducts, such as steryl glucosides (SG), accumulate in the storage tanks and negatively impact the quality of the final product. A purification procedure was developed to extract highly pure SG from these tank deposits, allowing biodiesel recovery. Furthermore, the SG can be transformed into phytosterols using a reaction process that does not require organic solvents and allows for reuse of acidified water.

Solvent-Free Glycosylation from per-O-Acylated Donors Catalyzed by Methanesulfonic Acid

Serena Traboni et al.

Summary: The novel glycosylation method reported in this study, based on the direct activation of per-O-acylated donors using methanesulfonic acid as a catalyst in the absence of solvents, offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach for the synthesis of carbohydrates and their derivatives. The method not only avoids the use of toxic and polluting organic solvents, but also shows high stereoselectivity and efficiency in obtaining desired glycosides.
