Effect of biochar addition on copper and zinc passivation pathways mediated by humification and microbial community evolution during pig manure composting

Ling Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of biochar concentration on the passivation of Cu and Zn during compost maturity. The results showed that 15% and 10% biochar concentrations favored the passivation of Cu and Zn, respectively. Biochar promoted the passivation of Cu by increasing HA production and optimizing the abundance of Firmicutes. It also promoted the passivation of Zn by increasing the high temperature peak and corresponding pH (8-8.5). However, a higher biochar concentration (15% and 20%) altered the dominant bacterial phylum from Firmicutes to Proteobacteria. Furthermore, 20% biochar inhibited the passivation of Cu and Zn by reducing the highest temperature and lowering the alkalinity of the substrate. These findings provide new insights into reducing the risk of hazardous products during pig manure composting through the addition of biochar.

Microbial metabolism and humic acid formation in response to enhanced copper and zinc passivation during composting of wine grape pomace and pig manure

Yingchao Zhang et al.

Summary: Adding wine grape pomace (WGP) during pig manure composting can decrease the bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs) by promoting the passivation effects of Cytophagales and Saccharibacteria_genera_incertae_sedis, leading to the formation of humic acid (HA). The polysaccharide and aliphatic groups in HA are responsible for transforming the chemical forms of HMs. Additionally, the Cu and Zn passivation effects can be enhanced by 47.24% and 25.82% respectively when 60% and 40% WGP is added. Polyphenol conversion rate and core bacteria are identified as crucial factors in HMs passivation.

Synergistic effect triggered by Fe2O3 and oxygen-induced hydroxyl radical enhances formation of amino-phenolic humic-like substance

Yingchao Zhang et al.

Summary: Metal oxides, particularly Fe2O3, play a crucial role in the formation of humic substances. This study investigates the synergistic interactions between Fe2O3 and O2 in the production of humic acid (HA). The results demonstrate that an O2 level of 21% is optimal for HA production in the presence of Fe2O3. O2 promotes the formation of hydroxyl radicals, which in turn enhances HA formation. Additionally, Fe2O3 acts as a catalyst and oxidant, contributing to the darkening process of humification.

Bioaugmentation mechanism on humic acid formation during composting of food waste

Xiaolu Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, the bioaugmentation mechanism of Humic acid (HA) formation in food waste compost was investigated by adding microbes. The results showed that bioaugmentation increased the rate and degree of humification, as well as the formation of aromatic structures and CC bonds. The bioaugmentation group had significantly higher HA content compared to the control group, and the polyphenol humification pathway played a major role. The addition of exogenous microbes promoted protein and carbohydrate degradation, while enhancing both the Maillard and polyphenol humification pathways. This research has practical implications for the directional humification process of food waste composting.
