Alkali Adatom-amplified Schottky contact and built-in voltage for stable Zn-metal anodes

Ryanda Enggar Anugrah Ardhi et al.

Summary: Alkali-metal adatom-modified amorphous carbon cluster passivation films (CCF-Ms) were formed on Zn-anodes using radiofrequency plasma thermal evaporation and alkali-metal hydroxide treatment. CCF-M enhanced the corrosion resistance, suppressed dendrite growth, and improved Zn2+ transport kinetics on the Zn-anode. After 5000 and 1302 cycles in a symmetric cell, Zn2+ could deposit rapidly and uniformly below CCF-M without dendrites and side reactions.

Recent Progress on Zn Anodes for Advanced Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Chuanhao Nie et al.

Summary: Aqueous Zn-ion batteries have gained significant attention as a promising energy storage candidate due to their safety, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendliness. However, the cycling stability of Zn metal anodes is a major challenge due to issues such as dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution. Interface engineering strategies, including controllable synthesis of Zn, surface engineering, electrolyte formulation, and separator design, have been developed to address these challenges. This review provides an update on these strategies and discusses future challenges and perspectives for the development of practical AZIBs.

Stable Zinc Metal Anode by Nanosecond Pulsed Laser Enabled Gradient Design

Zhaolin Na et al.

Summary: In this study, a gradient Zn anode (LLP@TreatedZn) with a passivated-layer at the top and fresh-zinc-layer at the bottom was developed using potassium permanganate solution treatment and laser lithography. The passivation layer prevents corrosion and side reactions, while promoting preferential deposition of Zn at the bottom of the microchannel. The LLP@Treated Zn anodes exhibited stable cycling performance over 700h at high current densities. Laser lithography also allowed for the fabrication of Zn anodes with different surface morphologies.

Stable Zinc Anodes Enabled by Zincophilic Cu Nanowire Networks

Shiyin Xie et al.

Summary: This article reports a novel strategy of using zincophilic Cu nanowire networks to stabilize zinc anodes. The Cu nanowire networks can homogenize the surface electric field and Zn2+ concentration field, and inhibit side reactions through their hydrophobic feature. The facets and edge sites of the Cu nanowires, especially the latter ones, are highly zincophilic, which promotes uniform zinc nucleation/deposition. The protected zinc anodes exhibit an ultralong cycle life and rapid charge/discharge ability.
