Biocompatibility evaluation of antioxidant cocktail loaded gelatin methacrylamide as bioink for extrusion-based 3D bioprinting

J. Anupama Sekar et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional (3D) liver bioprinting is a promising technique for creating liver models used in drug testing and transplantation. However, the lack of cell-cell interactions in 3D bioprinted liver constructs limits their functional performance. This study presents a new bioink formulation, GelMA loaded with antioxidants, to improve cell density and enhance liver-specific functions. In vitro and in vivo evaluations confirmed the bioink's biocompatibility and its ability to facilitate cell-cell interactions and liver-specific functions.

Surface engineering of hollow gold nanoparticle with mesenchymal stem cell membrane and MUC-1 aptamer for targeted theranostic application against metastatic breast cancer

Sahar Taghavi et al.

Summary: We fabricated and decorated MSCM-coated biomimetic doxorubicin-loaded hollow gold nanoparticles with MUC1 aptamer to create a smart theranostic platform. The platform exhibited a spherical morphology with a diameter of 118 nm. In vitro release experiments showed that the platform could respond to acidic environments, releasing 50% of encapsulated doxorubicin in 48 hours, while only 14% was released in physiological conditions. The targeted formulation demonstrated increased cytotoxicity against MUC1 positive cell line and effective tumor growth suppression in vivo.

Mahsa Hojabri et al.

Summary: Researchers developed fibers based on alginate and hydroxyethyl cellulose to mimic the fibrous sheath of ECM. The fibers showed good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, making them suitable as tendon substitutes. The study provides practical insight into tendon tissue engineering in translational medicine.

Angiogenesis and Re-endothelialization in decellularized scaffolds: Recent advances and current challenges in tissue engineering

Radman Mazloomnejad et al.

Summary: Decellularization of tissues and organs is a promising method in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, but acellular vasculature angiogenesis and endothelialization remain a challenge. Understanding the variables that affect endothelialization is crucial for addressing this obstacle. This review discusses decellularization methods, characteristics of acellular scaffolds, bioreactors, extracellular matrix surface modification, and cell types that influence endothelialization outcomes, aiming to optimize re-endothelialization.

Immunogenicity of decellularized extracellular matrix scaffolds: a bottleneck in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine

Mohammadreza Kasravi et al.

Summary: Tissue-engineered decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffolds show promise in addressing donor shortage and immunologic rejection in tissue/organ transplantation. Decellularization removes immunogen cell materials and improves immunogenicity and biocompatibility of scaffolds. However, there are still major immunologic challenges in using these bioscaffolds.

Recent Advances in Liver Engineering With Decellularized Scaffold

Qingqing Dai et al.

Summary: Liver transplantation is currently the only effective treatment for end-stage liver disease, but the scarcity of donor livers is a major concern. The use of a decellularized scaffold in liver engineering has gained attention as it can preserve the original liver structure and bioactive chemicals, allowing for the creation of a new liver for transplantation. This review discusses the liver structure, decellularization, recellularization, recent developments, and the criteria and obstacles for using a decellularized scaffold.

Armin Ahmadi et al.

Summary: Bone-related diseases have a significant impact on the health of elderly individuals, and current treatments have limitations and complications. Regenerative medicine using stem cells shows promise in healing bone fractures and skeletal defects. This review discusses the use of small molecules to activate signaling pathways involved in osteogenesis and summarizes recent data on the differentiation of stem cells into bone-forming cells using these molecules.

A guide to the composition and functions of the extracellular matrix

Nikos K. Karamanos et al.

Summary: Extracellular matrix (ECM) is a dynamic 3-dimensional network of macromolecules providing structural support for cells and tissues. It plays key regulatory roles in cell signaling, functions, and morphology. Different ECM components affect cell processes such as proliferation, migration, differentiation, angiogenesis, and immunity regulation, with structural alterations associated with disease progression.

Recent advances in optimization of liver decellularization procedures used for liver regeneration

Mohaddeseh Khajavi et al.

Summary: Severe liver diseases are a leading cause of adult deaths globally, with liver transplantation being the primary treatment for end stage liver disease. Challenges such as donor shortage and side effects of immunosuppressive drugs are associated with liver transplantation. Tissue/organ decellularization is emerging as a promising alternative to address these issues.
