Life Cycle Assessment of District Heating Infrastructures: A Comparison of Pipe Typologies in France

Mahaut Vauchez et al.

Summary: Identifying decarbonization strategies at the district level is crucial for aligning urban projects with European climate neutrality objectives. District heating and cooling networks are an attractive energy system solution that allows for the integration of renewable energies and local hot or cold sources. A life cycle assessment comparing different distribution network infrastructures in Marseille, France, highlights the importance of pipe typology choice in reducing emissions by up to 80% and 77% for rigid and flexible systems respectively.

Identifying and assessing power system vulnerabilities to transmission asset outages via cascading failure analysis

Blazhe Gjorgiev et al.

Summary: This paper presents a methodology for assessing power system vulnerability by ranking important branches in the transmission grid and identifying sets of branches that would cause the most severe cascading failures. The methodology couples an AC based cascading failure simulation model and a meta-heuristic optimization procedure to achieve these objectives.

Effects of smart city construction on energy saving and CO2 emission reduction: Evidence from China

Qingbin Guo et al.

Summary: Smart city construction has significant effects on energy saving and CO2 emission reduction. It achieves energy savings and reduces per capita CO2 emissions by improving energy efficiency. The effects are more obvious in cities with higher administrative levels, faster technological progress, and more advanced industrial structures.

Evaluation of the vulnerability in water distribution systems through targeted attacks

Aiman Albarakati et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of a vulnerability analysis in different water distribution system (WDS) benchmarks, comparing different attack strategies and centrality measures for predicting water supply shortages. Results showed that removing the most central element and recalculating centrality were the most damaging attack strategies. Degree, eigenvector, and Katz centrality measures showed the best performance in predicting relevant elements in the network.

Method of power network critical nodes identification and robustness enhancement based on a cooperative framework

Shuliang Wang et al.

Summary: A novel framework is proposed in this paper to evaluate network robustness from different perspectives, considering typical complex network models and power characteristics. The study case of IEEE 118 bus test case was used to analyze the features of the power network based on topology theory and electrical science. It is found that critical nodes identification from different perspectives can lead to different results, highlighting the importance of integrating information from multiple angles. The study also suggests methods to improve power network robustness and discusses network recovery strategies.

Hydraulic transient modeling and analysis of the district heating network

Xuejing Zheng et al.

Summary: Two hydraulic transient models (DPM and LPM) and efficient numerical algorithms were established and applied to a large-scale DH network for simulating and analyzing network hydraulic transients caused by valve and pump operations. The DPM can capture high-frequency hydraulic transients subtly, while the LPM can only describe average hydraulic fluctuations. The computation time of LPM is shorter due to neglecting pressure waves and fluid compressibility.
