Bayesian Physics Informed Neural Networks for data assimilation and spatio-temporal modelling of wildfires

Joel Janek Dabrowski et al.

Summary: In this study, we apply the Physics Informed Neural Network (PINN) to model wildfire fire-fronts by solving the level-set equation. We propose novel additions to the optimisation cost function to improve temporal continuity under extreme changes and develop a data assimilation approach within the PINN. We also incorporate these novel approaches into a Bayesian PINN (B-PINN) to provide uncertainty quantification in fire-front predictions, which is not naturally offered by the standard solver.

Using echo state networks to inform physical models for fire front propagation

Myungsoo Yoo et al.

Summary: Wildfires can cause devastating damage to property, ecosystems, and loss of life. Accurate forecasting of wildfire boundaries is crucial for real-time management. Existing approaches rely on parameterized formulas for spread and often overlook uncertainty. This study proposes a novel hybrid model that combines an echo state network with a physically-based level set model for data-driven learning and uncertainty quantification.

Statistical Challenges in Agent-Based Modeling

David L. Banks et al.

Summary: Agent-based models (ABMs) are popular in various research communities, but the theoretical development of ABMs has seen limited contributions from statisticians. There is still ongoing learning on how to fit ABMs to data and make quantified statements of uncertainty about their outputs. The validation of ABMs is an underdeveloped area that presents opportunities for new statistical developments.

A new type of dual-scale neighborhood based on vectorization for cellular automata models

Bin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new dual-scale neighborhood (DSN) combined with vectorization to address the contradiction in the selection of neighborhood size in cellular automata (CA) models. Experimental results show that DSN can improve simulation accuracy and computational efficiency.
