Summary: This study develops Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) as surrogate models of RVE response while preserving the evolution of local micro-structure state variables. Several surrogate models based on dimensionality reduction are proposed and compared, and the training strategy is optimized to enhance GPU usage. Additionally, the connection between physical state variables and hidden variables of RNN is revealed and utilized in selecting hyperparameters for RNN-based surrogate models at the design stage.

An FE-based orientation averaging model for elasto-plastic behavior of short fiber composites

S. M. Mirkhalaf et al.

Summary: A new micro-mechanical model is proposed to predict the non-linear elasto-plastic behavior of short fiber reinforced composites. The model is based on a two-step Orientation Averaging method and can accommodate a wide range of micro-structural parameters. Comparisons to experiments and numerical simulations show that the model provides accurate predictions. Additionally, the model is computationally efficient and can be used in applications with different fiber orientations.

Microstructure-guided deep material network for rapid nonlinear material modeling and uncertainty quantification

Tianyu Huang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a deep-learning-based approach called microstructure-guided deep material network (MgDMN) for efficient prediction of the mechanical response of multi-phase materials under various loading paths and microstructures. The proposed method parameterizes the microstructure space, maps a set of deep material networks (DMNs) to their respective microstructure parameters, and uses interpolation to generate new models. The MgDMN achieves high efficiency and accuracy, enabling complex structural simulations and nonlinear stochastic analyses with uncertain microstructures.
