Soil (microbial) disturbance affect the zinc isotope biogeochemistry but has little effect on plant zinc uptake

Xiaowen Liu et al.

Summary: We conducted an experiment to test the effect of plant growth and soil microbial disturbance on zinc in soil and plants. The results showed that the concentration and isotope fractionation of zinc in the soil and soil pore water increased over time, which was likely due to physical disturbance and fertilization. The presence of maize increased zinc concentration and isotope fractionation in the pore water, possibly due to the uptake of light isotopes by plants and root exudates that solubilized heavy zinc from the soil. Sterilization disturbance increased the concentration of zinc in the pore water, possibly due to abiotic and biotic changes. However, the zinc content and isotope fractionation in the plant did not change.

Revealing the Mechanistic Basis of Regulation of Phosphorus Uptake in Soybean (Glycine max) Roots by Molybdenum: An Integrated Omics Approach

Xiaoming Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of molybdenum and phosphorus treatments on root morphology, nutrient uptake, and gene expression and metabolism in soybean plants. The results show that molybdenum application can enhance biomass, lateral root growth, and phosphorus concentration and accumulation. It also regulates the synthesis and secretion of organic acids and acid phosphatase, thereby increasing the availability of phosphorus in the soil. The findings suggest that molybdenum plays a crucial role in plant adaptation to different phosphorus levels.

Molybdenum: More than an essential element

Xin-Yuan Huang et al.

Summary: Molybdenum is an essential element for almost all living organisms, and its uptake and transport, as well as its homeostasis in plants, play crucial roles in biological processes and adaptation to local environments. Recent research suggests that molybdenum is also involved in plant adaptation to coastal salinity.

Long-term excessive phosphorus fertilization alters soil phosphorus fractions in the acidic soil of pomelo orchards

Xiaohui Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that long-term excessive phosphorus fertilization significantly increased the concentration of phosphorus in pomelo orchard soils and had differentiated impacts on phosphorus fractions. Excessive soluble phosphorus and aluminum phosphorus may enhance phosphorus bioavailability and increase environmental risks in acidic red soils.

Species-level identity of Pisolithus influences soil phosphorus availability for host plants and is moderated by nitrogen status, but not CO2

Emiko K. Stuart et al.

Summary: The study found that different species of ECM fungi have specific effects on the amount of plant-available phosphorus in the soil, as well as affecting the abundance of P cycling genes in the soil bacterial community. Nitrogen and CO2 levels also impact these P cycling processes.

Leaching of heavy metals from lead-zinc mine tailings and the subsequent migration and transformation characteristics in paddy soil

Rongguo Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the leaching of heavy metals (HMs) from lead-zinc mine tailings and its subsequent effects on paddy soil. The results showed that the concentrations of HMs in the leachate increased with the liquid-to-solid ratio, with Mn and Zn showing the highest increasing rates. When paddy soil was exposed to lead-zinc mine tailings, the HMs accumulated significantly and their contents increased over time. The vertical migration rates of HMs in the paddy soil varied, with Zn and Mn being more easily leached and migrated into deeper layers. The distribution of HMs in different chemical fractions also varied.

Molybdenum Role in Nitrogen Bioavailability of Wheat-Soil System Using the Natural 15N Abundance Technique

Mohamed G. Moussa et al.

Summary: Molybdenum (Mo) application can enhance nitrogen (N) bioavailability and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) capacity in wheat-soil systems. It increases the activities of nitrogenase and nitrate reductase enzymes, microbial biomass of N, and photosynthetic variables. Mo application also significantly increases N-15 fixation and delta N-15 abundance in both soil and plant, suggesting its importance in converting atmospheric N-2 into bioavailable NH3 and providing N to terrestrial ecosystems.

Relationships between nitrogen cycling microbial community abundance and composition reveal the indirect effect of soil pH on oak decline

K. Scarlett et al.

Summary: The health of oak trees is influenced by the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in the soil, with a positive correlation between AOB abundance and soil pH. In contrast, there is no clear relationship between the abundance of archaea (AOA) and tree health. The ratio of soil carbon to nitrogen (C:N) is a key factor influencing denitrifier abundance, with correlations with AOB regardless of tree health.

Root exudates drive soil-microbe-nutrient feedbacks in response to plant growth

Mengli Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of root exudates from different growth stages of Arabidopsis thaliana plants on soil bacterial communities, soil nutrients, and plant growth. The results showed that fast-growing stage root exudates had a significant impact on soil bacterial community structure, induced higher nutrient mineralization, and enhanced plant growth. Plants may adjust their exudation patterns during different growth phases to meet increased nutrient demands for faster growth.

Strong phosphorus (P)-zinc (Zn) interactions in a calcareous soil-alfalfa system suggest that rational P fertilization should be considered for Zn biofortification on Zn-deficient soils and phytoremediation of Zn-contaminated soils

Honghua He et al.

Summary: There are strong interactions between phosphorus and zinc in calcareous soil-plant system, which significantly affect the bioavailability of zinc, plant growth, accumulation of zinc and phosphorus, and partitioning of zinc in alfalfa. Rational phosphorus fertilization is important for efficient zinc biofortification on zinc-deficient soils and phytoremediation of zinc-contaminated soils.

Mass spectrometry-based quantification and spatial localization of small organic acid exudates in plant roots under phosphorus deficiency and aluminum toxicity

David Gomez-Zepeda et al.

Summary: Low-molecular-weight organic acid (OA) extrusion by plant roots plays a critical role in plant nutrition, tolerance to cations toxicity, and plant-microbe interactions. This study developed two complementary methodologies for OA determination, which were used to evaluate the effect of inorganic ortho-phosphate (Pi) deficiency and aluminum toxicity on OA excretion by Arabidopsis roots. The quantification of six OAs in root exudates and the spatial location of citric and malic acid in roots and exudates were successfully achieved using targeted ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS/MS) and targeted matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI).
