Serum Microelements, Amino Acids and Acyl Carnitines Levels in Pregnancies Complicated with Preeclampsia: A Prospective Study

Summary: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using serum microelements, amino acids, and acyl carnitine levels as potential predictors for maternal complications and adverse infant outcomes in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia. The results revealed that levels of certain microelements, amino acids, and acyl carnitines were significantly different in preeclampsia patients compared to the control group. Among preeclampsia patients without severe features, lower levels of (C16 + C18:1)/C2 were associated with maternal complications and adverse infant outcomes. These findings suggest that (C16 + C18:1)/C2 may serve as a potential biomarker for predicting outcomes in preeclampsia patients without severe features.

A global perspective of correlation between maternal blood lead levels and risks of preeclampsia: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This study demonstrates that maternal lead exposure is associated with preeclampsia during pregnancy. The association is present even in low blood lead levels. The conclusion should be taken seriously and women should avoid unexpected exposure to a lead-containing environment as much as possible.

Maternal cadmium exposure impairs placental angiogenesis in preeclampsia through disturbing thyroid hormone receptor signaling

Summary: This study found that cadmium exposure reduces placental angiogenesis in preeclampsia by decreasing the expression of PLGF and VEGF and increasing the expression of sFlt1. Cadmium exposure also decreases the expression of thyroid hormone receptor alpha and Dio2. These results suggest that cadmium exposure impairs placental angiogenesis in preeclampsia by disturbing thyroid hormone receptor signaling.

An updated systematic review on the association between Cd exposure, blood pressure and hypertension

Summary: The study reevaluated the relationship between cadmium exposure and altered blood pressure, finding a positive association between blood cadmium levels and blood pressure and/or hypertension. However, conflicting results and a lack of representative population-based studies of non-smokers leave uncertainty about the association between urinary cadmium and blood pressure and/or hypertension. Additional longitudinal studies are urgently needed to confirm the findings.

Summary: Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy disorder characterized by placental malperfusion, leading to hypertension and multi-organ injury, with potential fetal growth restriction and stillbirth. While prophylactic low-dose aspirin can reduce the risk of preterm pre-eclampsia, there are currently no curative treatments once pre-eclampsia is diagnosed except for delivery. Ongoing studies are evaluating various strategies and drugs to prevent and manage pre-eclampsia.
