Taylor vortex-based protein crystal nucleation enhancement and growth evaluation in batchwise and slug flow crystallizers

Tiantian Tao et al.

Summary: The utilisation of nucleation seeds, coupling nucleation and growth during crystallization and realistic continuum are currently relatively robust, reliable and scalable methods for protein crystallization optimization. Here, we design a segmented crystallization method, in which combines the characteristics of the Taylor vortex enhanced lysozyme nucleation stage. This strategy successfully expanded the lysozyme crystallization from the original 10 mL scale to 200 mL, realized the continuous process, and providing a promising strategy for the design and operation of continuous SFC to produce high value protein crystals in the future.

Engineering characterization of the novel Bach impeller for bioprocessing applications requiring low power inputs

Tom A. Wyrobnik et al.

Summary: This paper characterizes a novel impeller, the Bach impeller, in stirred-tank reactors (STRs) and discusses its unique geometry and mechanism of action. Experimental results show that the Bach impeller has a low power consumption and can achieve uniform suspension of microcarriers even at relatively low impeller speeds. The impeller also displaces a comparable amount of fluid to the conventional 3BS impeller, indicating its suitability for low power input, high mixing, and particle suspension efficiency in the (bio)chemical engineering industry.

Effect of Taylor vortex wavelength on polymorphic crystallization of L-histidine

Sun-Ah Park et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of Taylor vortex wavelength on the polymorphic nucleation and phase transformation of L-histidine. The results show that decreasing the vortex wavelength and increasing the vortex velocity promote stable nucleation and increase the initial polymorphic fraction, leading to a higher rate of phase transformation.

Influence of Taylor Vortex Flow on the Crystallization of L-Glutamic Acid as an Organic Model Compound

Thi Thanh Huyen Trinh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the impact of Taylor vortex flow on the crystallization and polymorph selection of L-glutamic acid. The results show that amorphous intermediates form before the crystalline phase, and their morphology is governed by the velocity of the Taylor vortex flow. The intensity of the Taylor vortex flow determines the phase selectivity, and a critical Taylor number triggers the fast formation of the beta-polymorph.

Synthesis of Micro-/Nanohydroxyapatite Assisted by the Taylor-Couette Flow Reactor

Boyin Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of Taylor-Couette flow reactors with different inner diameters were designed to assist in synthesizing hydroxyapatite (HAP) micro/nanocrystals, which have good biocompatibility and adsorption properties. It was found that the Taylor-Couette flow reactor could improve the mixing behavior and the flow field distribution, and successfully transformed amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) into needle-like HAP crystals with a uniform particle size distribution.

Salting-Out crystallization of glycopeptide Vancomycin: Phase behavior study to control the crystal habit

Siyu Pu et al.

Summary: Needle-shaped crystals in pharmaceutical manufacturing can be avoided by controlling the pH and salt concentration, as shown in this study on glycopeptide crystallization behavior. Octahedral crystals were found to be the predominant habit across a range of conditions, demonstrating higher yield and stability compared to needle-shaped crystals.

Effect of hydrodynamic heterogeneity on micromixing intensification in a Taylor-Couette flow reactor with variable configurations of inner cylinder

Lu Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of hydrodynamic heterogeneity on micromixing intensification in a Taylor-Couette flow reactor with different inner cylinder configurations using a competitive reaction system. Results showed that micromixing efficiency decreased with increasing Reynolds number and feeding time but increased with acid concentration. The lobed inner cylinder exhibited better micromixing performance compared to the circular inner cylinder under various operating conditions.

Modelling of turbulent shear controllable co-precipitation synthesis of lithium ion battery cathode precursor micro-particles in a Taylor-Couette flow reactor with variable configurations of inner cylinder

Lu Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing shear rate can suppress particle growth and reduce the size of synthesized particles. The Taylor-Couette flow with a lobed inner cylinder achieved enhanced shear rate and improved particle properties compared to using a circular inner cylinder.
