VISION: VIdeo StabilisatION using automatic features selection for image velocimetry analysis in rivers

Alonso Pizarro et al.

Summary: VISION is an open-source software written in MATLAB for video stabilization using automatic feature detection. It has been mainly developed for image velocimetry applications in rivers. The software offers various options for customization based on user needs and intended applications, allowing for the selection of different feature detection algorithms, definition of the percentual value of features for stabilization, choice of geometric transformation type, definition of a region of interest, and real-time visualization of stabilized frames. A case study demonstrated the effectiveness of VISION in reducing velocity errors compared to field measurements. VISION is a user-friendly software suitable for both research and educational purposes.

Estimating the uncertainty of video-based flow velocity and discharge measurements due to the conversion of field to image coordinates

Jerome Le Coz et al.

Summary: The development of video-based hydrometry requires orthorectification of images to ensure each pixel has the same physical size. Implicit and explicit calibration methods are commonly used to compute the coefficients of the transformation, which are beneficial in obtaining precise estimates.

Considerations When Applying Large-Scale PIV and PTV for Determining River Flow Velocity

Martin J. Jolley et al.

Summary: Research in large-scale image velocimetry for non-contact remote sensing of flow in rivers has mainly focused on developing specific aspects of the image velocimetry workflow and testing tools or software using case studies. The varied practices employed between groups and authorities have led to a multitude of techniques being developed. Literature has been compiled to suggest circumstances in which specific approaches are best applied, providing examples from a range of sources to guide decision making. Further research is needed in areas lacking clear guidelines, such as the influence of external environmental conditions on image velocimetry performance, for the method to be effectively used in extracting river flow information across different hydro-geomorphic conditions.
