Synergistic Effects of SO2 and NH3 Coexistence on SOA Formation from Gasoline Evaporative Emissions

Tianzeng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synergistic effects of SO2 and NH3 on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from vehicle evaporative volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The coexistence of SO2 and NH3 had a greater promotion effect on SOA formation, larger than the cumulative effect of the two promotions alone. Furthermore, SO2 increased the oxidation state (OSc) of SOA in the presence of NH3. This study provides insights into the formation of SOA from vehicle evaporative VOCs under complex pollution conditions and its atmospheric implications.

Sensitivity of PM10 oxidative potential to aerosol chemical composition at a Mediterranean urban site: ascorbic acid versus dithiothreitol measurements

A. Clemente et al.

Summary: The oxidative potential (OP) of PM10 samples collected at a traffic site in southeastern Spain during summer and winter was assessed using two acellular assays: the ascorbic acid (AA) and dithiothreitol (DTT) methods. The OP values showed a defined seasonal trend, with higher AA activity in summer and higher DTT reactivity in winter. The results of linear correlation analysis indicated that both assays were sensitive to different PM10 components.

Linking Cell Health and Reactive Oxygen Species from Secondary Organic Aerosols Exposure

Fobang Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that oxidative stress may be a mechanism through which ambient fine particulate matter exerts adverse biological effects. It also demonstrates the association between cellular health and ROS levels upon exposure to secondary organic aerosols, emphasizing the role of oxidative stress in the biological effects of SOA exposure.

Vehicular Ammonia Emissions Significantly Contribute to Urban PM2.5 Pollution in Two Chinese Megacities

Yunjie Wang et al.

Summary: Previous studies have mainly focused on agricultural ammonia emissions and neglected the impact of vehicular ammonia emissions on air quality in cities. This study developed high-resolution emission inventories for Beijing and Shanghai based on traffic data and simulated the contribution of vehicular ammonia emissions to PM2.5 concentrations. It was found that vehicular ammonia emissions accounted for a significant proportion of total anthropogenic ammonia emissions in urban areas, and could contribute to approximately 3% of urban PM2.5 concentrations during winter. Controlling vehicular ammonia emissions is an effective measure to mitigate urban PM2.5 pollution in the future.

Contribution of Physical and Chemical Properties to Dithiothreitol-Measured Oxidative Potentials of Atmospheric Aerosol Particles at Urban and Rural Sites in Japan

Kazuki Kurihara et al.

Summary: Dithiothreitol-measured oxidative potential (OPDTT) can chemically quantify the adverse health effects of atmospheric aerosols. This study investigated the effect of both physical and chemical properties on the variation in OPDTT of atmospheric aerosols. The major emission sources governing OPDTT variations were found to be anthropogenic combustion, the iron-steel industry, and secondary organic aerosols. Furthermore, the increased specific surface area did not lead to an increase in the OPDTT of atmospheric aerosols.

Gas-to-Aerosol Phase Partitioning of Atmospheric Water-Soluble Organic Compounds at a Rural Site in China: An Enhancing Effect of NH3 on SOA Formation

Shaojun Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigates the partitioning process of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) and its impact on secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formation. The results show that WSOC primarily partitions to the organic phase during dry periods and to aerosol liquid water during humid periods. NH3 plays a crucial role in the formation of WSOC aerosols.

Pollution characteristics and sources of environmentally persistent free radicals and oxidation potential in fine particulate matter related to city lockdown (CLD) in Xi'an, China

Dyussenova Ainur et al.

Summary: The impact of COVID-19 control measures on air quality has been significant, but there is limited research on the toxicity of atmospheric particulate matter during the epidemic. This study found that PM2.5 concentration decreased by 48% during the city lockdown (CLD) in Xi'an, China. The concentrations of other air pollutants and components also decreased, except for O-3 which increased during CLD. The concentration of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in PM2.5 decreased by 12%, while oxidative potential (OP) slightly increased. The study suggests a need for further research on the health effects of EPFRs and OP, as well as the secondary processing of EPFRs and OP during lockdown periods.

Ionic composition of six-year daily precipitation samples collected at JRC-Ispra (Italy) in relation to synoptic patterns and air mass origin

Konstantinos Dimitriou et al.

Summary: This study analyzed a six-year dataset of daily precipitation samples collected in rural Italy in conjunction with synoptic patterns and the Concentration Weighted Trajectory (CWT) model. The aim was to identify atmospheric mechanisms and transport pathways affecting the concentrations of major inorganic ions. The study found that the concentrations of all ions were negatively correlated with precipitation amounts. Anthropogenic constituents primarily originated from continental Europe, while sea salt species came from various seas surrounding Italy and Saharan dust intrusions increased the levels of crustal constituents.

Inter-comparison of oxidative potential metrics for airborne particles identifies differences between acellular chemical assays

Pourya Shahpoury et al.

Summary: Oxidative potential (OP) is an important factor in the health effects of airborne particulate matter (PM). This study compared 11 OP indicators using standard reference material of urban PM. The indicators showed first-order kinetics at low PM concentration, but non-linear kinetics at higher concentrations. They demonstrated linear dose-response relationships at certain PM concentrations, but varied in their sensitivities to PM.

Summary: This study investigated the oxidative potential (OP) of PM10 and PM2.5 samples collected in Milan, Italy, and found a general association of volume-normalized OP with PM mass, with higher OP activity in wintertime. The sensitivity of the two acellular assays towards transition metals and their relationship with atmospheric pollutants were assay- and location-dependent.

Nine-year trends of PM10 sources and oxidative potential in a rural background site in France

Lucille Joanna Borlaza et al.

Summary: Long-term monitoring at a rural background site in France showed that secondary aerosols associated with long-range transport are the dominant sources of particulate pollution, while traffic, mineral dust, and biomass burning contribute significantly to the oxidative potential. The findings suggest the effectiveness of emission control policies.
