Studies of the transition between amplified spontaneous emission and optical lasing in ultrahigh-Q polymeric micro-pedestals

H. M. Reynoso-De La Cruz et al.

Summary: In this work, we investigate the properties of Rhodamine B-doped polymeric cylindrical microlasers and their applications as gain amplification devices or optical lasing gain devices. We study the microcavity families with different %wt concentrations and geometrical features, and find that their performance depends on the gain amplification phenomena. The microlasers demonstrate low ASE and optical lasing thresholds, high Q-factor, and the ability to generate a visible emission comb with over a hundred peaks.

High-Performance Organic Laser Semiconductor Enabling Efficient Light-Emitting Transistors and Low-Threshold Microcavity Lasers

Fan Yin et al.

Summary: An organic light-emitting transistor (OLET) is a promising device for developing organic solid-state lasers, but finding suitable organic semiconductors with high solid-state emission efficiency, ambipolar mobility, and large stimulated emission cross-section has been a challenge. In this study, researchers designed a molecule called 4,4'-bis(2-dibenzothiophenyl-vinyl)-biphenyl (DBTVB) and prepared ultrathin single-crystal microplates with herringbone packing arrangements. These microplates exhibited balanced mobilities, high emission efficiency, and low-threshold laser characteristics. The study also showed that strong electronic coupling and a small reorganization energy were key factors for efficient charge transport, while the exciton-vibration effect and negligible pi-pi orbital overlap contributed to highly emissive H-aggregates and facilitated laser emission. Furthermore, DBTVB crystals in OLETs showed an internal quantum efficiency of nearly 100% and a record-high electroluminescence external quantum efficiency of 4.03%.

Low-cost fabrication of microlasers based on polymeric micropedestals

H. M. Reynoso-de la Cruz et al.

Summary: The research utilizes direct laser writing and low one-photon absorption to print micrometric polymeric structures in a low-cost three-dimensional optical fabrication system, resulting in microlasers with broad fluorescence peaks and narrow lasing peaks. The observed narrow lasing peaks exhibit quality factors exceeding 2000 and a lasing threshold of approximately 5 μJcm(-2). The free spectral range associated with the lasing peaks of approximately 3 nm is consistent with simulations presented in the paper.

Adjusting single-axis acoustic levitators in real time using rainbow schlieren deflectometry

Victor Contreras et al.

Summary: Acoustic levitation uses high-intensity airborne ultrasound to hold particles in mid-air, and a simple method utilizing rainbow schlieren deflectometry can visualize a 2D projection of the acoustic field in real time. This technique improves performance and reduces energy consumption of the levitators.

A purely kinetic description of the evaporation of water droplets

Frances A. Houle et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple three-step kinetic model for water evaporation was proposed and validated using established thermodynamic models and experimental data. The model describes the evaporation process as a combination of two limiting processes occurring in the liquid-vapor interfacial region.

Submegahertz spectral width photon pair source based on fused silica microspheres

Erasto Ortiz-Ricardo et al.

Summary: The research team constructed a high-efficiency submegahertz bandwidth photon pair generator using an ultrahigh quality factor fused silica microsphere resonant cavity, achieving narrow spectral width photon pair generation. They successfully heralded a single signal photon through filtering via a wavelength division multiplexing channel.
