Data-driven model-based flow measurement uncertainty quantification for building central cooling systems using a probabilistic approach

Shaobo Sun et al.

Summary: Uncertainties in measurements can affect the energy performance of building central cooling systems. This study proposes a data-driven model-based strategy to quantify flow measurement uncertainties using Bayesian inference and Monte Carlo sampling methods. The strategy is tested on an air-cooled chiller and accurately quantifies both systematic and random uncertainties, with relative errors within 10%.

Improvement of virtual in-situ calibration in air handling unit using data preprocessing based on Gaussian mixture model

Tianyi Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method that uses Gaussian mixture model to preprocess historical data in order to address the uncertainty issue in calibration results caused by the dynamic nature of operating conditions in air conditioning systems. By applying the VBEM algorithm and EM algorithm to cluster and solve the GMM, the clustering results are incorporated into a virtual in-situ calibration method, leading to improved accuracy of the sensors.

An online robust sequencing control strategy for identical chillers using a probabilistic approach concerning flow measurement uncertainties

Shaobo Sun et al.

Summary: This study proposed an online robust sequencing control strategy for chiller plants under low-quality and uncertain flow measurements, which effectively reduced the impacts of flow measurement uncertainties and improved the performance of chiller plants. The uncertainty processing model accurately quantified the measurement uncertainties of water flow rates, leading to significant reductions in root-mean-square error of cooling loads, total switching number of chillers, and cumulative unmet cooling load. The proposed control strategy showed the ability to tolerate flow measurement uncertainties.

Dong Hyuk Yi et al.

Summary: The study proposes using model evidence as an objective index for selecting the optimal hypothesis of unidentifiable parameters in Bayesian inference of building energy models. It shows that higher model evidence leads to posterior values closer to true values; however, there is no significant relationship between model prediction error and the accuracy of posterior inference.
