Transport of nanoscale zero-valent iron in saturated porous media: Effects of grain size, surface metal oxides, and sulfidation

Bo Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the retention and transport of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) modified nZVI (CMC-nZVI) and sulfidated nZVI (CMC-S-nZVI) particles in saturated columns packed with quartz sand. The results showed that grain size reduction inhibited the transport of both CMC-nZVI and CMC-S-nZVI, while metal oxide coatings had minimal effect. CMC-S-nZVI exhibited higher breakthrough and mass recovery compared to CMC-nZVI under the same experimental conditions.

Clogging effect of fines in seepage erosion by using CFD-DEM

Hao Xiong et al.

Summary: The macroscopic phenomena and microscopic origin of penetrative migration and retention of fine particles in porous skeleton are studied through simulations using the coupled computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method. The results show that pore size significantly contributes to the degree and position of clogging, flow velocity affects cluster distribution, and more inflow fines aid the development of particle clusters in flow-avoidable areas.

Remediation of hexavalent chromium in column by green synthesized nanoscale zero-valent iron/nickel: Factors, migration model and numerical simulation

Fang Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, green tea extract-synthesized nanoscale zero-valent iron/nickel (GT-nZVI/Ni) was used to remediate Cr(VI) contaminated soil columns. The optimal conditions for the suspension, as well as the factors influencing its effectiveness, were investigated. The addition of Na+ and Ca2+ promoted the immobilization of Cr(VI) in soil, while humic acid weakened this process. Injection of GT-nZVI/Ni resulted in a significant reduction of weak acid extractable and reduced chromium, thereby reducing the toxic hazard of hexavalent chromium in the soil.

A method of sizing plugging nanoparticles to prevent water invasion for shale wellbore stability based on CFD-DEM simulation

Rui Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new method based on simulation for sizing plugging nanoparticles to prevent water invasion for shale wellbore stability. By constructing a computational model, microscopic plugging criterion, and macroscopic plugging performance evaluation indexes, a novel method is developed for selecting nanoparticle size. It supports the selection of plugging nanoparticles size through obtaining the microscopic plugging behaviors and macroscopic plugging performances.

Summary: This study utilized pore-network modeling to investigate the transport and retention of colloids in porous media, revealing the distribution patterns of pore-scale transport parameters. The research demonstrated that single-valued effective parameters may not accurately reflect the characteristics of these parameters.

Pore-network modeling of colloid transport and retention considering surface deposition, hydrodynamic bridging, and straining

Dantong Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, the pore-network model was used to investigate the transport and retention behavior of water flow and colloids in porous media. The results showed that different retention mechanisms could lead to different retention profiles, with hydrodynamic bridging not occurring under certain conditions. The PNM proves to be an effective tool for predicting colloid transport and retention behavior in porous media.

Removal of heavy metal ions and polybrominated biphenyl ethers by sulfurized nanoscale zerovalent iron: Compound effects and removal mechanism

Summary: S-nZVI has been reported to effectively remove heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, but the presence of co-existing cations can affect the removal efficiency of PBDEs. The study showed that the presence of certain heavy metal ions can inhibit the reduction of PBDEs by S-nZVI, while others can accelerate the transformation of organic pollutants.

Field-scale investigation of nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) injection parameters for enhanced delivery of NZVI particles to groundwater

Summary: The study found that controlling the flow rate (pressure) and NZVI concentration and dose effectively controlled NZVI mobility in groundwater. In the third and fourth tests with high flow rates under pressure, NZVI was effectively delivered to the wells, resulting in relatively high cumulative mass recoveries.
