The role of anaerobic methane oxidation on the carbonate authigenesis in sediments of the subtropical Beibu Gulf, South China Sea: A reactive-transport modelling approach

Sinan Xu et al.

Summary: The formation and burial of authigenic carbonate in marine sediment significantly affect the sedimentary carbon cycle and its isotopic mass balance in geological history. The primary driver of authigenic carbonate precipitation within the sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ) is anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). However, quantitative estimations of the role of AOM on the authigenic carbonate precipitation and its carbon isotope under non-steady-state processes are still limited.

Formation of authigenic carbonates contributed by sulfate- and metal-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane in the northern Okinawa Trough, East China Sea

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: Authigenic carbonates from the northern Okinawa Trough were studied using various methods, revealing the presence of aragonite, high-magnesium calcite, low-magnesium calcite, and dolomite minerals. The formation of these carbonates was attributed to anaerobic methane oxidation processes, with different microorganisms involved, including ANME and SRB. ANME-2 and ANME-1 were identified in calcitic and other carbonates, respectively, while dolomite-containing carbonates showed a decoupling of ANME and SRB. These findings provide important insights into methane oxidation in the northern Okinawa Trough.

Methane Seepage Caused by Gas Hydrate Dissociation in the Mid-Okinawa Trough Since the Last Glacial Maximum

Ang Li et al.

Summary: The study used uranium-thorium dating to analyze the authigenic carbonate crust at drilling site D1 in the Mid-Okinawa Trough. The results showed that the crust mainly grew downwards during 14-6 ka. The research further supports the hypothesis that global climatic changes can lead to the release of a significant amount of methane from marine hydrates.

Grain size and geochemistry characteristics of Core S01-10 from the central Okinawa Trough since 14 ka: Indications for sediment source and the East Asian winter monsoon

Deyong Li et al.

Summary: Based on grain size and trace element analysis of Core S01-10 from the western continental slope area of central Okinawa Trough, high-resolution paleoenvironment records since 14 ka had been obtained. The transportation of terrigenous materials substance from the main rivers in Chinese Mainland (the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers) to the western slope of central Okinawa Trough is affected by the East Asian winter monsoon. The analysis of grain size parameters and trace element in the western slope of central Okinawa Trough can indicate changes of provenance, sea level rising and falling, and winter monsoon in this area since 14 ka.

Methane-derived authigenic carbonates-A case for a globally relevant marine carbonate factory

Sajjad A. Akam et al.

Summary: Precipitation of methane-derived authigenic carbonates (MDAC) is an important part of marine methane production and consumption. MDAC formation is the result of carbon-sulfur (C-S) coupling in shallow sulfatic zones and carbon-silicon (C-Si) coupling in deeper methanic sediments. MDAC plays a significant role in carbon sequestration and benthic alkalinity sink, contributing to the global biogeochemical cycles.

Aerobic oxidation of methane significantly reduces global diffusive methane emissions from shallow marine waters

Shi-Hai Mao et al.

Summary: This study investigated methane sources and fates in the East China Sea and estimated the global rates of aerobic methane oxidation (MOx) in shallow waters using machine-learning models. The results showed that methane is produced during methylphosphonate decomposition and sedimentary release. High MOx rates were observed in productive coastal waters and were correlated with methanotrophic activity and biomass. The study estimated that aerobic methanotrophy can consume around half of the methane annually in near-shore waters, significantly reducing global methane emissions.

Development of submarine canyons on the continental slope of the Okinawa Trough with potential origin related to methane seepage

Deyong Li et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed analysis of the geomorphological and erosional-depositional features of submarine canyons in the Okinawa Trough. It reveals that the canyons mainly developed during the last glacial maximum and were influenced by slope failure induced by gas hydrate dissociation and methane seepage. The study confirms the complex relationship between submarine canyons and methane seepage associated with gas hydrate through seismic expressions and geological features.

A new method for the U-Th dating of a carbonate chimney deposited during the last glaciation in the northern Okinawa Trough, East China Sea

Lisheng Wang et al.

Summary: Authigenic carbonates from cold seep systems, such as chimney and crust carbonate deposits, are important archives of biogeochemical processes associated with methane-rich fluids on the seafloor. A new U-Th dating method was used to precisely determine the ages of carbonates from a chimney in the Okinawa Trough, showing potential for studying the evolutionary history of these carbonates.

Structural controls on widespread methane seeps in the back-arc basin of the Mid-Okinawa Trough

Ang Li et al.

Summary: This study used various geological methods to reveal the distribution of gas seeps in the back-arc basin of the Mid-Okinawa Trough, showing that these seeps are caused by tectonic stress-driven extensional faults providing permeable conduits. Different types of gas seeps are proposed to be influenced by methane supply, with the control of these seeps being diverse and complex geological features.

Low-latitude control on sea surface temperatures in the middle Okinawa Trough over the last 3.6 kyr

Fangjian Xu et al.

Summary: The OKI-152 core from the middle Okinawa Trough is a significant late Holocene core that can help interpret paleoclimatology and paleoceanography better. The sea surface temperatures over the past 3.6 kyr derived from this core showed variations influenced by the East Asian monsoon and western Pacific, rather than the high-latitude North Atlantic climate. This suggests a complex interaction among the Okinawa Trough, Pacific Ocean, and East Asian monsoon system that needs further exploration through modern observations, paleoceanographic proxies, and modeling studies.

Sedimentary mercury and antimony revealed orbital-scale dynamics of the Kuroshio Current

Summary: The Kuroshio Current is crucial in shaping regional oceanography and climate in the Northern Hemisphere. Studies using sedimentary proxies of mercury and antimony from the Okinawa Trough reveal dynamic variations over the last 92,000 years, with noticeable impacts during different climatic periods. The dynamics of the Kuroshio Current are controlled by tropical atmosphere-ocean interactions induced by sea surface temperature changes and regulated by extratropical climate conditions.
