Dissolved rare earth elements in the Pearl River Delta: Using Gd as a tracer of anthropogenic activity from river towards the sea

Lan Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of yttrium and rare earth elements (REE) in surface water of the Pearl River Delta in southern China, and identified both natural and anthropogenic sources that influence their concentrations. The study found that estuarine mixing processes caused the removal of colloidal REE through salt-induced flocculation, while REE desorption from particles occurred with increasing salinity. The study also observed anomalies in Gd and Sm concentrations, which indicated significant impacts from human activities such as wastewater treatment plants and industrial sources.

Assessment of sulfamethoxazole toxicity to marine mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis): Combine p38-MAPK signaling pathway modulation with histopathological alterations

Mengjie Qu et al.

Summary: In this study, the tissue-specific responses of marine mussels to SMX exposure were investigated. The results showed that gills exhibited faster and more significant responses, while digestive glands showed higher tolerance to SMX. The study also revealed that SMX triggered inflammatory damages and activated the p38-MAPK signaling pathway, regulating the immune defense in mussels. These findings provide important insights into the health risks and regulatory mechanisms of SMX in marine mussels.

Acute toxicity of single and combined rare earth element exposures towards Daphnia similis

Silvia Gonsalves Egler et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the acute toxic effects of lanthanum (La), neodymium (Nd) and samarium (Sm) as single, binary and ternary mixtures on the survival of Daphnia similis. The results showed that toxicity was higher in medium without chelators and lower in medium with chelators. The toxicity effects varied in binary and ternary mixtures. These findings contribute to the understanding of the environmental effects of Rare Earth Elements (REE) and provide a basis for future guidelines and ecological risk assessments.

Responses of microRNA in digestive glands of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to polystyrene nanoplastics

Zhen Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, the miRNA responses of digestive glands in mussels treated with PS-NPs were analyzed. The results showed significant differential expression of miRNAs, indicating that PS-NPs disturb various biological processes. Additionally, histopathological analysis revealed severe disruptions in metabolic capability in digestive glands under PS-NPs stress.

Comparison of the toxicity of pure and samarium-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles to the green microalga Chlorella vulgaris

Sanaz Feizi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential toxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and samarium-doped ZnO NPs (Sm/ZnO NPs) on the green microalga Chlorella vulgaris. The results show that both ZnO and Sm/ZnO NPs induce concentration-dependent cytotoxicity, including reduced cell growth, decreased photosynthetic pigment contents, and deformation in the cellular morphology. Sm-doping plays a significant role in enhancing the toxicity of ZnO NPs on C. vulgaris cells.

Impacts of engineered iron nanoparticles on oxidative stress, fatty acid composition, and histo-architecture of the smooth scallop Flexopecten glaber

Imen Rabeh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the toxicity mechanisms of nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) on marine invertebrates. The results show that NZVI causes oxidative stress, alterations in antioxidant defense systems, changes in lipid metabolism, and histological damages in bivalves. This study adds to the growing body of evidence highlighting the hazardous impacts of iron nanoparticles on aquatic ecosystems.

Toxicity of gamma aluminium oxide nanoparticles in the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis): histopathological alterations and antioxidant responses in the gill and digestive gland

Selin Erturk Gurkan et al.

Summary: The study found that contamination of gamma-Al2O3 NPs negatively affects the aquatic organism. Histopathological indices were significantly higher in all exposure groups compared to the control group in gill and digestive gland. The proportion of atrophic phase tubules was very high in the 20 and 40 mg/L gamma-Al2O3 NPs exposure groups.

Rare Earth Element in Bivalves' Soft Tissues of French Metropolitan Coasts: Spatial and Temporal Distribution

Nicolas Briant et al.

Summary: The study found that REE concentrations in bivalves along the French coastline are influenced by estuaries, with the highest levels observed in the Gironde estuary. The distribution patterns of REEs in the two mussel species differ, with oysters showing higher HREE enrichment. No environmental parameter could be linked to the changes in distribution patterns.

Gonadal histopathology and inflammatory response in the freshwater snail exposed to iron oxide nanoparticles and ferric chloride: Insights into reproductive nanotoxicity

Candido Carvalho Rodrigues et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to gluconic-acid functionalized IONPs and FeCl3 resulted in various gonadal histopathological changes in snails, with GLA-IONPs inducing a more intense inflammatory response. Environmentally relevant concentration (2.5 mg L-1) of both GLA-IONPs and FeCl3 led to high gonadal histopathological indices, indicating their potential reproductive toxicity.

Impacts of nanoparticles and phosphonates in the behavior and oxidative status of the mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis)

Badreddine Sellami et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of gold nanoparticles decorated zinc oxide (Au-ZnO NPs) and phosphonates on Mediterranean mussels, with mixed exposure showing minimal impact on metal content in mussels, leading to decreased filtration capacity and respiration rate. Furthermore, exposure to both pollutants resulted in changes in oxidative stress and neurotoxic pathways in the mussels.
