Biomolecular analyses enable new insights into ancient Egyptian embalming

Maxime Rageot et al.

Summary: The ability of ancient Egyptians to preserve human bodies through embalming has fascinated people. Through archaeological, philological, and organic residue analyses, this study sheds new light on the embalming practice in ancient Egypt. The analysis of ceramic vessels from a 26th Dynasty embalming workshop revealed the use of specific mixtures of oils, tars, and resins for embalming. The study also highlights the trade networks that provided ancient Egyptian embalmers with foreign substances needed for mummification.

Chemical evidence for milk, meat, and marine resource processing in Later Stone Age pots from Namaqualand, South Africa

Courtneay Hopper et al.

Summary: The subsistence practices and dietary choices of Later Stone Age foragers and herders in Namaqualand, South Africa, were investigated through lipid residue analysis of potsherds. The presence of marine biomarkers in coastal sites suggests intensive processing of marine products, while the dominance of ruminant carcass products at inland sites confirms the importance of stockkeeping. Furthermore, chemical evidence provides the first direct proof of dairy product use in LSA western South Africa.

Diet, economy, and culinary practices at the height of precolonial Swahili urbanism

Erendira M. Quintana Morales et al.

Summary: This comprehensive study provides a detailed understanding of precolonial Swahili cuisine at the coastal town of Songo Mnara, using archaeological and ethnographic methods. The findings highlight the importance of lipid residue analysis in determining the consumption and value of plant and animal products, as well as the treatment of specific foodstuffs and the influence of taste, class, and culture on urban life.

Honey-collecting in prehistoric West Africa from 3500 years ago

Julie Dunne et al.

Summary: The study found that over one third of lipid residues in prehistoric pottery vessels from the Nok culture in West Africa indicated exploitation and processing of bee products, likely including honey collection. This highlights the probable importance of honey collecting in an early farming context in West Africa around 3500 years ago.
