Waste PET upcycling to conductive carbon-based composite through laser-assisted carbonization of UiO-66

Dmitry Kogolev et al.

Summary: We propose utilizing laser-assisted carbonization of surface-grown UiO-66 to diversify the upcycling of waste PET into materials with enhanced photothermal properties. A solvo-thermal procedure was used to form a homogeneous UiO-66 layer on recycled PET sheets. Treatment with a 405 nm laser system enabled the formation of a carbonaceous layer with improved electrical conductivity and photothermal properties due to the presence of zirconium carbide and graphene. This approach presents new possibilities for the application of upcycled PET-based materials.

The synergetic effect of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate from glycolysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate) on the intumescent flame retardancy of waterborne polyurethane

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: In response to the increasing accumulation of polymer waste, researchers have been focusing on chemical recycling and value-added utilization of polymers. This study synthesized bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) from glycolysis recycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste and combined it with microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (SiO2@APP) and carboxymethyl chitosan to create a series of intumescent flame-retardant waterborne polyurethane (IFRWPU). The results showed that the combination of BHET and SiO2@APP had a synergistic effect, resulting in an IFRWPU with excellent flame retardancy properties. This work provides a novel strategy for constructing superior flame-retarded waterborne polyurethane with admirable bonding performance.

Heng Xu et al.

Summary: A high-strength self-healing supramolecular polyurethane with excellent mechanical properties and self-healing efficiency has been developed based on a continuous loose hard segment structure. The material exhibits strong mechanical strength due to the presence of strong soft segments and high-density loose hydrogen bond arrays. The asymmetric alicyclic loose hard segment structure allows for quick hydrogen bond recombination, enabling effective self-healing. Additionally, the material has shown promising potential as a conductive polymer matrix in the field of self-healing conductive composite materials.

Recyclable and removable functionalization based on Diels-Alder reaction of black phosphorous nanosheets and its dehydration carbonization in fire safety improvement of polymer composites

Wei Cai et al.

Summary: By utilizing reversible Diels-Alder reaction, precise control over the formation and elimination of surface functionalization composed of triallyl isocyanurate on black phosphorous (BP) nanosheets has been achieved. This surface functionalization not only enhances the interfacial interaction between BP nanosheets and polymer matrix, but also converts them into phosphorus pentoxide and phosphoric acid with dehydration carbonization effect. Incorporating functionalized BP nanosheets significantly reduces the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) in cone calorimetric tests.

Material characterization of a pultrusion specific and highly reactive polyurethane resin system: Elastic modulus, rheology, and reaction kinetics

Onur Yuksel et al.

Summary: This study characterized the chemical behavior, cure kinetics, and viscosity evolution of a polyurethane resin system for pultrusion. The gelation point was estimated from the cross-over point of storage and loss modulus curves, and the corresponding cure degree was determined using a cure kinetics model. DMA was used to measure the elastic modulus and glass transition temperature of fully and partially cured samples. A five-step cure hardening model was well fitted to a wide range of cure degree values after gelation. These material models were then applied to a case study of a typical pultrusion process to study the effects of pulling speed on material property evolution.
