Developmental impacts of Nrf2 activation by dimethyl fumarate (DMF) in the developing zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryo

Emily S. Marques et al.

Summary: Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is used to treat inflammatory diseases, but it can have adverse effects on offspring during pregnancy. This study investigated the effects of DMF-induced Nrf2 activation during different stages of embryonic zebrafish development. The results showed that Nrf2a mutant fish had increased survival but more severe deformities during the hatching stage. Furthermore, DMF affected Nrf2a protein levels and S-glutathionylation in a tissue-specific manner. This study highlights the importance of critical windows of exposure and Nrf2a activity in the toxicity of DMF and provides insights into tissue-specific changes during embryonic development.

Seasonal Changes in Photoperiod: Effects on Growth and Redox Signaling Patterns in Atlantic Salmon Postsmolts

Peng Yin et al.

Summary: Farmed Atlantic salmon show an increase in antioxidant consumption during spring, but it is unclear whether this is caused by the increase in day length, temperature, or both. A simulated natural photoperiod experiment with constant temperature revealed that increasing day length led to depleted intracellular antioxidants and increased MDA levels in the liver and muscle of Atlantic salmon. The study also found a redox signaling pathway involved in the oxidative stress response and a correlation between oxidative status and physiological function in Atlantic salmon.

Changes in daylength and temperature from April until August for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) reared in sea cages, increase growth, and may cause consumption of antioxidants, onset of cataracts and increased oxidation of fillet astaxanthin

Kristin Hamre et al.

Summary: The hypothesis of this study was that increased growth in spring, stimulated by temperature and daylength, leads to oxidative stress and changes in antioxidant utilization in Atlantic salmon. The study found that vitamin E and vitamin C concentrations decreased in the spring and were restored in the autumn, while astaxanthin concentration remained constant during the spring and summer and increased in the autumn. Cataract and melanin spots were observed during the spring and early summer. However, the concentrations of malondialdehyde and astaxanthin did not support the hypothesis, and more data is needed to draw conclusions on the effects of oxidative stress on melanin spots.

Modulation of physiological oxidative stress and antioxidant status by abiotic factors especially salinity in aquatic organisms

Abhipsa Bal et al.

Summary: Exposure to environmental factors like temperature, pH, oxygen, and salinity can affect oxidative status in aquatic organisms. This review article explores the modulation of oxidative stress in aquatic animals due to changes in salinity, with a focus on developing precautionary measures for sustainable conservation of aquatic species. Research spanning over 50 years indicates that oxidative stress and redox modulation have evolved from analyzing various factors to studying cellular signaling pathways in aquatic organisms.

The transcriptomic responses of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to high temperature stress alone, and in combination with moderate hypoxia

Anne Beemelmanns et al.

Summary: Increasing temperature to 20 degrees C alone, and in combination with hypoxia, resulted in differential expression of genes involved in similar pathways in Atlantic salmon. However, heat shock and immune-related genes in fish exposed to 20 degrees C and hypoxia were more affected, and strongly related to phenotypic characteristics such as growth. This study provides valuable information on how environmental challenges affect the expression of stress-, metabolic- and immune-related genes in fish, identifying potential biomarker genes for fish health and welfare improvement.
