Performance Enhancement and Remediation of Microcracks in Cement Mortar by Doping Calcite-Precipitating Microorganisms

Prabhath Ranjan Kumar Soda et al.

Summary: Experiments with Bacillus megaterium MTCC 8510 showed enhanced performance and crack remediation in cement mortar. Direct addition of bacteria in cement mortar resulted in improved compressive strength, reduced chloride diffusivity, and diminished water permeability. Effective crack healing was observed by spraying bacterial solution directly on cracks on a daily basis.

Multifunctional cementitious composites with integrated self-sensing and self-healing capacities using carbon black and slaked lime

Wenkui Dong et al.

Summary: This study develops multifunctional cementitious composites with integrated self-sensing and self-healing capacities by incorporating conductive carbon black and CB-encapsulated slaked lime. The stress sensing capacity performs well with compressive stress, and autogenous healing performances significantly improve with increased SL content. Healing efficiency is affected by crack width and SL dispersion, with smaller cracks with SL being more easily healed.

Statistical and experimental investigation on self-healing of microcracks in cement mortar by encapsulation of calcite precipitating bacteria into expanded perlite

Prabhath Ranjan Kumar Soda et al.

Summary: In this study, Bacillus megaterium MTCC 8510 was successfully encapsulated in expanded perlite for healing micro cracks in concrete. The addition of 20% of encapsulated perlite in cement mortar improved crack healing but led to a decrease in compressive strength. To mitigate the strength reduction, 5% nano-silica was added, maintaining both healing efficacy and strength.
