Organic Telluride Formation from Paint Solvents Under Gamma Irradiation

Summary: The interactions between tellurium and organic material during a nuclear reactor accident are investigated in this study. The experiments show that tellurium(IV) can be reduced to metallic tellurium under irradiation in the presence of paint solvents. Moreover, the formation of volatile organic tellurides suggests the possibility of tellurium forming volatile species in contact with dissolved paint solvents under containment sump conditions.
