Bimodal microstructure toughens plasma sprayed Al2O3-8YSZ-CNT coatings

Alok Bhadauria et al.

Summary: The current research focuses on generating controlled bimodal microstructure for potential thermal barrier coating (TBC) by plasma spraying micrometer-sized Al2O3 and nanostructured spray-dried agglomerate with reinforcement of 20 wt% of 8 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) and 4 wt% carbon nanotube (CNT) on the Inconel 718 substrate. The composite coatings exhibit a bimodal microstructure with fully melted and resolidified microstructured region (MR) and partially melted and solid state sintered nanostructured regions (NR). The addition of 8YSZ reinforcement leads to increased hardness and the introduction of CNT results in similar hardness but improved fracture toughness due to crack termination and toughening mechanisms.

Effective polymerization technique for plasma-treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes to maximize wear resistance of composite polyurethane

Daisuke Ogawa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the technique of enhancing the wear resistance of polyurethane films by compositing them with plasma-treated carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The results show that introducing plasma-treated CNTs before the synthesis of the polyurethane maximizes the wear resistance of the composite films.

Strong, tough, transparent and highly heat-resistant acrylic glass based on nanodiamond

Seira Morimune-Moriya et al.

Summary: Strong, tough, transparent, and highly heat-resistant nanocomposites made of nanodiamond (ND) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were prepared via a simple water-based process. The nanocomposites exhibited a remarkable increase in mechanical and thermal properties at low ND contents, with an improvement in Young's modulus, tensile strength, and toughness. The incorporation of ND also led to higher thermal degradation temperature and glass transition temperature, exceeding the theoretical values and demonstrating the successful impartation of excellent properties of ND to the nanocomposites.

Multiscale model to predict fracture toughness of CNT/epoxy nanocomposites

Hyunseong Shin

Summary: A multiscale model is proposed to predict the fracture toughness of CNT/epoxy nanocomposites, reflecting experimentally observed toughening mechanisms and showing satisfactory agreement with experimental data. The study compares the contributions of each toughening mechanism and aims to reveal the complex nature of fracture toughness of CNT/epoxy nanocomposites while providing efficient and satisfactory predictions.

Enhancing thermal dimensional stability of polyimide composite films through in-situ constructing highly interfacial grafting degree to constrain early chain relaxation

Rui Qin et al.

Summary: Flexible polyimide composite films with superior thermal properties can be improved by constraining early relaxation of macromolecular chains, resulting in significantly decreasing coefficient of thermal expansion and enhancing thermal stability. Constraining structure was successfully achieved by mechano-mixing fluorinated multi-walled carbon nanotubes into benzimidazole-contained polyimide. Experimental results showed noticeable improvements in thermal and mechanical properties of the composite films.
